Honestly, do deadlines bother anyone? For the 2nd time in a matter of days, a Baltimore franchise makes a crucial signing at the last minute. Last Friday, it was Kevin Gausman inking his rookie deal. Today, it was Ray Rice committing to the Ravens for the next 5 years, with a $40 million deal.
According to Adam Schefter at ESPN, sources are saying that Rice will be paid “$17 million in the first year and $25 million in the first two years.”
So I am not sure how much of that is tied up in signing bonuses and guaranteed money, but at first glance, that seems like a lot of cap money that the Ravens don’t have.
Then again, playing with happy, a Ray Rice is like getting lucky at www.
I’m still fluxuating on whether Ozzie’s decision will help or cripple the team, but I really need to see the details before I can make any assumptions. In the meantime, let’s celebrate that football season is just around the corner.
It wouldn’t be the first time Ozzie screwed up the salary cap……………he’s pretty good at it………..
Rice is my favorite Raven, but I am really, REALLY surprised at this deal. You don’t usually get 9 productive years out of a back, but I guess they view him as a special guy. The deal will certainly have cap implications in year 4 or 5 when Rice will probably be in serious decline, but it looks like they are pushing all their chips to the middle of the table.
