2009 Season: There is not a lot to be said about Lamar Divens’ 2009 campaign. The run-stuffing defensive lineman was placed on IR in August due to a hip injury and did not play a down for the Ravens. Divens did have hip surgery as recently as January of this year. Divens is expected to be healthy for the start of training camp in just over a week and will compete for a spot in the Ravens defensive line rotation. Health has been an issue with Divens, who was claimed off waivers after being released by the San Diego Chargers in 2008. Dviens saw action in 3 games for the Ravens in ’08, but even then had a hard time staying healthy enough to not appear on the injury report.
2010 Outlook: Divens is going to have a difficult time making the final cut when all is said and done. The Ravens are typically deep on the defensive line and they appear to be even deeper in 2010. Despite losing Dwan Edwards and Justin Bannan too free agency, the Ravens have seemingly plugged those holes with the signing of Corey Redding and acquiring Terrence Cody and Arthur Jones in the draft. Both Redding and Jones have the flexibility to play end and tackle, making the chances of Divens sticks with the Ravens even slimmer. It could come down to who has the stronger camp between Divens, Jones and Brandon McKinney. Divens does have the advantage of still being only 24 years old and he has a bit more bulk than either Jones or McKinney. This will not be a sexy position battle in camp, but whoever sticks could have a significant role on the Ravens line in future years.
