Every Orioles fan can tell you Buck Showalter is a very articulate and intelligent individual, but something he said after Wednesday’s game has garnished national attention. When asked if he had any advice for young African-Americans in Baltimore, Showalter then gave an answer we all needed to hear.

I’ve never been black, OK? So, you know, I can’t put myself there. I’ve never been faced the challenges they face. So I understand the emotion but I can’t…it’s a pet peeve of mine when someone says, “Well, I know what they’re feeling. Why don’t they do this? Why doesn’t anybody do that?” You have never been black, OK, so just slow down a little bit.

A perfect answer from a man who is well respected in the game of baseball and in the city of Baltimore. I do not think you will hear a better answer to any kind of question surrounding this entire ordeal.

When I watched this for the first time I was shocked, not because he said the wrong thing; but because he said the right thing and is one of the first people to. This whole situation gets uglier when ignorance is brought into it, whether it is from politicians, the media, anybody of importance or just average citizens.

We can all learn a thing or two from Buck, whether it is about baseball or just life. I really need him to write a book.
