The Baltimore Orioles honored Earl Weaver on Saturday with a sweep of their double header against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Birds rallied back to win 7-5 in game one and took advantage of Manny Machado‘s three run homer in game two to win 6-1. Pitching, defense and the three run homer. There couldn’t have been a more fitting game to honor The Earl of Baltimore.
“We had to hit a three-run homer on Earl’s night, right?” Buck Showalter asked reporters after the game.
It certainly seemed fitting.
My favorite Earl Weaver quote is written in the home plate plaza at the club level at Camden Yards:
“You can’t sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You’ve got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That’s why baseball is the greatest game of them all.”
– Earl Weaver
It was a night Earl couldn’t have drawn up better himself. Chen struggled early, but only yielded one run. Couple nice defensive plays, and the young gun, Manny, hits a three run shot.
Rest in Peace, Earl.
You cut out the best part!!! The little kid giving the double bird to Crawford
