Baltimore sports talker WNST tweeted an interesting comment from one NFL coach during the NFL Combine last week. Though the coach wasn’t specified, he told the station that former Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison “didn’t know what he was doing.”
GMC: One #NFL Coach- “The #Ravens have a chance now with #Pagano. The other guy (#Mattison) didn’t know what he was doing.”
Though the comment would have had a much greater effect if the coach had been named, it still is interesting to hear. Do you agree with the mystery coach?
Getting used to Mattison’s defense was tough, but I came around to start thinking that his more conservative scheme was actually helping to hide some weaknesses. So I guess I started to think that the talent on defense was the problem.
Either I’m wrong about the talent on defense or that NFL coach is wrong about Mattison. Otherwise the Ravens managed to be top 10 defense two years in a row with a clueless coordinator, a weak secondary and no pass rush.
A mystery man has also said that “Harbaugh is clueless and doesn’t know what he is doing”….
Like you said, it is hard to place a lot of credibility in an un-named coaches comment. It is clear Mattison did not have the agressive play calling of his predecessors, but he also did not have the talent. Despite that the Ravens played well on defense under mattison, just not as well as we are used to.
We will find out if the coach is right and if Pagano is that much of an upgrade. I have a feeling though that he will have a few more pieces to work with.
I’m figuring that one of the released Ravens coaches is the one who said Mattison was clueless…
Can’t wait till Zorn say Harbaugh is a clown… Of course real Raven fans like MGW and I already know this…
Look, the bottom line is we all believe the stuff that supports our side of the argument. I can name you a half a dozen players who have had negative things to say about this coaching staff and the Harbaugh supporters will say it’s sour grapes. The bottom line for me is that I believe this team has underachieved the last two years and usually the coach gets the blame for that. You can point to playoff appearances, etc, but if you didn’t believe this team had the talent to be a top six (out of 16 team) you’re kidding yourself. They have yet to win the Division under Harbaugh and were the fifth seed this year. Cowboys fans can tell you if your team has talent, even a chucklehead like Barry Switzer can win a championship. The talent was there for the Ravens, the coaching staff let them down.
