Orioles defense could be one of the best in MLB historyAnyone who has watched the Baltimore Orioles this season knows their defense is good, but maybe they didn’t realize they were this good. The O’s have committed the fewest errors in the big leagues (43), the next closest team (Tampa Bay Rays) has 54.

The White Sox are atop the league in errors with 112 — that’s over 2 1/2 times more errors than Baltimore has committed.

MASNSports.com’s Roch Kubakto tweeted after Sunday’s game that the Orioles recorded their 113th errorless game, tying the 2008 Houston Astros for most in a season since 1900. That’s like — 113 years ago.

It’s also a franchise record, passing their 104 errorless games in 1998.

According to STATS, the Birds are the first team in MLB history to post 100 errorless games by the end of August.

The Orioles are on pace for 46 errors this season, which would smash the single-season record (65) set by the 2003 Seattle Mariners. Additionally, the Orioles lead the league with a .992 fielding percentage, which, if they hold on through September, would be the best in Major League history topping the 2007 Rockies’ .989 mark.

How about advanced metrics? Well I’m glad you asked.

The Orioles 48.6 UZR is second in Major League Baseball behind the Kansas City Royals. Their .849 RZR leads the American League and is second in MLB behind the Reds.

Yes folks, we might be watching something truly special as the Orioles defense could be one of the best in MLB history.
