Baltimore Orioles versus State College of Florida Manatees.  Who you got?

Down in Sarasota the O’s welcomed in the Manatees for an exhibition game that “gave the appearance of a controlled scrimmage,” according to the Bradenton.com’s Jason Dill.  The Orioles provided pitching for the State College of Florida, but fielded a team with some Opening Day starters including Matt Wieters, Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy.

Still the Manatees edged the Orioles 2-1 in eight innings and SCF’s Orlando Rivera considers this a win over a pro baseball team.  “Even though we didn’t have our own pitchers, a ‘W’ is a ‘W’ … You gotta take the ‘W’.”

This isn’t the first time this has happened.  SCF defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 back in 2009.

But assistant coach Tim Hill II wouldn’t chalk this one up as a win.  “I would not claim it as a ‘W,'” he said. “For us, we’re so down on pitching right now with four conference games this week. Fortunately for us, they were very understanding.”

I wouldn’t read too much into this one.  These are the types of games in which batters swing at every first pitch to make the game roll by fast.  I’m sure the O’s are eager to begin the season, not to play a college team.
