After scoring the 2011 NHL All-Star Game’s first goal, Alex Ovechkin made history in the third peroid by throwing his stick at Colorado’s Matt Duchene. Ovechkin’s attempt to stop Duchene from scoring resulted in the NHL’s first ever penalty shot during an All-Star Game, but it was stopped by Ovie’s teammate goaltender Henrik Lundqvist.

Ovechkin joked with Katie Carrera of the Washington Post after the game about the little defense in Raleigh.

“Well, I want to be in history, so now I’m in history,” Ovechkin joked afterward. As for his take on the style of play in the all-star game: “I like it – lots of offense with no defense.”

Ovechkin’s team, Team Staal, fell to Team Lindstrom 11-10, despite jumping out to an early 4-0 lead.
