Everyday on BSR we’re going to take a look at a different Oriole’s numbers from last season and setting goals for them this year. Today we’re going to look at quite possibly the Birds’ biggest star. He will certainly play a big role for the club over the next six years, fresh off his new 66 million dollar contract contract through 2014, we’re talking about star right fielder Nick Markakis.

Markakis’ numbers in 2008 were fantastic considering his start to the season. If you remember back to the early months, you might remember Nick struggling at the plate. He struck out quite a bit and took a little while to get going, but he still finished above .300.
I wouldn’t expect for Nick to do much more than he he did last season, but I would expect him to to go into 2009 being patient at the plate. I’d say 31 fewer strike outs and 13 more walks would be a big improvement for Markakis. Just like the other speedy Orioles, I’m projecting a few more stolen bases. It is always exciting to see B-Rob and Nick do a double steal, which we saw a few times last year. If the Orioles want to win a few more games they’re going to be aggressive on the bases.
After that big contract, I’d expect Markakis to be a little more relaxed than last year and have a few more runs batted in and doubles. For Markakis to have a good season he will have a better eye earlier in the season and continue his fantastic defense in right field. The word is out on Nick now, if his numbers are close to our projections he’ll definitely be playing in the All Star Game.
