Orioles Start Double Header With Back-To-Back-To-Back Home Runs

The Orioles kicked off their double header against the Texas Rangers with a bang. Ryan Flaherty led off the game with his first career home run, then J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis followed him in order.

Hardy’s home run traveled 424 feet, while Markakis’ reached Eutaw Street.

Here are some fun stats on the home runs from your friendly local Orioles reporters:

  • The last team to lead off a game with three homers was the 2007 Milwaukee Brewers with Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy and Ryan Braun.
  • The last time the Orioles hit three consecutive home runs was August 21, 2010 with Ty Wigginton, Luke Scott and Josh Bell.
  • The last time the Orioles hit three home runs in the first inning (not back-to-back-to-back) was June 12, 1999 with Brady Anderson, Mike Bordick and Will Clark.

Luke Scott Thinks Fenway Park Is A “Dump”

C’mon Baltimore.  Don’t you miss Luke Scott?  The gun wielding birther could always say or do something that made you laugh.  No matter how ridiculous.

Just because he’s moved away to Tampa doesn’t mean he’s changed.  Scott has only been with the Rays for a few months and he’s already made headlines by showing off his seven foot long spears and calling Red Sox fans “ruthless and vulgar.”

His disdain for the city of Boston continued on Friday.  When asked about historic Fenway Park, which celebrates its 100th year this season, Scott didn’t have anything good to say.  ”As a baseball player, going there to work, it’s a dump,” Scott said according to ESPNBoston.com.

“I mean, it’s old. It does have a great feel and nostalgia, but at the end of the day, I’d rather be at a good facility where I can get my work in,” he added.  ”A place where I can go hit in the cage, where I have space and it’s a little more comfortable to come to work.”

The Fantasy God’s Outfield Rankings

Outfield is incredibly deep again.  It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to say that.  There really isn’t one true working strategy for this position either.  If you get one guy early, one guy in the middle, and one or two guys late, you should be pretty balanced and solid.  Some people like to target 3 guys early and dominate the position.  That also makes your team look pretty strong.  I’ve never taken that approach personally.  I’d rather spread out my OF picks throughout the draft.  If it’s getting late your lacking outfielders, don’t worry.  There are plenty of guys late.  Plus there are 1B’s that you can put in your OF spots.  I talked about that a little in my 1B article.  I really like the idea of having at least one 1B in your OF.  If you draft a good 1B, a good utility 1B, and put one in your OF, you’ve got 3 power hitting 1B’s on your team.

2012 Fantasy Outfield Rankings:
1. Matt Kemp (LAD)
2. Ryan Braun (MIL)
3. Jose Bautista (TOR)
4. Carlos Gonzalez (COL)
5. Justin Upton (ARI)
6. Giancarlo Stanton (MIA)
7. Curtis Granderson (NYY)
8. Jason Heyward (ATL)
9. Josh Hamilton (TEX)
10. Jacoby Ellsbury (BOS) READ MORE >>>

The Fantasy God’s First Base Rankings

It’s the most important offensive position in fantasy baseball.  You have got to have a very strong 1B to have a credible team.  Actually you should possess multiple 1B’s.  The strongest of offenses will have a strong #1 starter, another power hitting utility 1B, and possibly a 1B in the outfield.  This year there are a lot of 1B’s that quality in the OF.  The power that they offer make them great late round picks as an OF.  Guys like Morales, Belt, Morse, Alonso, Trumbo, and LaHair are all 1B/OF.  Considering all of that, here are my 1B rankings.

2012 Fantasy First Base Rankings:

1. Albert Pujols (LAA)
2. Miguel Cabrera (DET)
3. Joey Votto (CIN)
4. Adrian Gonzalez (BOS)
5. Prince Fielder (DET) READ MORE >>>

Luke Scott Calls Red Sox Fans “Ruthless,” “Vulgar,” Trouble Makers

Two days and two Luke Scott headlines.  That’s a record here on BSR.

And the guy doesn’t even play in Baltimore anymore.

It’s tough to dislike Scott after his comments about Red Sox fans on Wednesday.  ” The fans come in and they take over the city,” Scott told Bill Chastain of MLB.com. ” They’re ruthless. They’re vulgar. They cause trouble.”

I’ve been in the bleachers… I hear you Luke.

“They talk about your family. Swear at you. Who likes that? When people do that, it just gives you more incentive to beat them. Then when things like [the last game of last season] happen, you celebrate even more. You go to St. Louis–classiest fans in the game. You do well, there’s no vulgarity. You know what? You don’t wish them bad.”

As we learned yesterday, unless you’re a criminal or a communist, Luke Scott doesn’t have a problem with you.

Luke Scott Brought A Seven Foot Long Pig Killing Spear In The Rays Clubhouse Yesterday

Oh Luke Scott, Baltimore misses you.

What better way for the new Tampa Bay Ray to meet his teammates at Spring Training than to show off the 7 1/2 foot spears he uses to kill wild pigs?  I can’t think of a better introduction.

“Guys were asking me about them,” Scott told Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.  ”Take a look, see what you think, come out (hunting) if you want.”

Luke was that kid that every teacher feared during show and tell day.

“You don’t have to worry about me unless you’re a criminal or a communist,” Scott added.  Someone put that on a t-shirt, please.

Orioles Roundup: Baltimore Still A “Dead End” For Free Agents

Unfortunately today’s top story on Yahoo Sports is this piece by Jeff Passan.  Passan says that “Baltimore remains a dead-end destination” and blames ownership for the Orioles’ woes.  He talks about why Prince Fielder will not want to come to Baltimore, the worries of Brian Matusz, and the fall of Brian Roberts.  It’s hard to refute anything that Passan says in the article.

Luke Scott On Leaving Baltimore: “The Decision Wasn’t Very Difficult At All”

For the media, Luke Scott has always been fun to discuss.

Scott parted ways with the Orioles this offseason and signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Tampa Bay Rays.  On his way out the door, the former O’s slugger answered a few questions with The Sun’s Dan Connolly about leaving Charm City.

“The decision wasn’t very difficult at all,” Scott said.  ”Baltimore never made a formal offer, never really expressed much interest.”

Roch Kubatko confirmed Scott’s comment, tweeting that his agent heard back from the Orioles once this offseason and that they never made a “firm offer” after Scott was non-tendered.

Scott complimented the city and the Orioles fan base saying that they “have been wonderful” to him.

The Rays make their first trip to Camden Yards on May 11 and Scott talked about returning in a visitor’s uniform.  ”There’ll be some emotion, but after that it will wear off and I’ll do whatever it takes to help my team win.”

“I spent four years in Baltimore and I bled orange and black. …I now bleed baby blue and white.”

Luke Scott The Tampa Bay Ray

Luke Scott agreed to a contract with the Tampa Bay Rays today.  It’s a one year deal with an option to return in 2013.  Scott came to Baltimore in 2008 as part of the Miguel Tejada trade to Houston.   Between 2008 and 2010 Scott put up decent HR totals in the mid 20′s and gained a reputation as being one of the streakiest players in baseball.  In 2011 Scott was bitten by the injury bug and only played in 64 games.  Seeing how Scott will be turning 34 years old this coming season, and has declined statistically, the Orioles decided to non tender him last month.  The possibility of re-signing Scott had been an ongoing discussion between the Orioles and Scott since he was non tendered.  Today however marks the end of the Luke Scott era in Baltimore. Quiet Orioles Offseason – Remaining Free Agents

Right from the start new Orioles GM Dan Duquette said that the O’s wouldn’t be pursuing any top free agents. His plan was to lay back and wait for the best bargains. But will that plan put a winner on the field? Spending too much money hasn’t worked for Baltimore, as we saw with Miguel Tejada, Javy Lopez, and Rafael Palmeiro. Not spending and building from within has also not worked, as we saw with a young rotation of Matusz, Arrieta, Britton, and Tillman. So will finding a happy medium and doing nothing but filling the holes be the answer? No way. So the Orioles have to make smart “good bargain” moves. And it surely isn’t impossible to still have a good off-season at this point. Take a look at the bargain players the Pirates have already acquired. They added small pieces for limited money that I think have major upside for that team. Guys like Erik Bedard, Rod Barajas, Ryota Igarashi, Nate McLouth, and Jake Fox could be steals for them. And yes, I mean former Orioles Bedard and Fox. So are there still good enough players out there for the Orioles to get in order to have a successful off-season? So far we have gotten 3 guys that I actually feel have been nice bargains. Tsuyoshi Wada, Endy Chavez, and Dana Eveland. None are superstars, but all could play a large role for the limited money they are making. Who else can the birds bring in to add to that list? Let’s take a look position by position at unsigned free agents. They are ranked in order of who I think the Orioles should sign.

O’s allow Luke Scott to become free agent

After a season where he was limited to 64 games and batted just .220, the Orioles decided not to tender a 2012 contract to outfielder Luke Scott. Last season, Scott was slowed by a torn labrum and wasn’t able to get things going offensively the way the O’s were hoping. So, this didn’t come as much of a surprise considering he would be making close to $6 million through arbitration next season. Manager Buck Showalter said he hopes the organization can work something out with Scott, but there hasn’t been any specific discussions as to what will happen.

Scott, who was named the 2010 Most Valuable Oriole after batting .284 with 27 home runs and 72 RBI, was a popular player in the clubhouse as well as with fans. The “Luuuuuuke” chant was a regular occurrence when Scott stepped in the batter’s box at Camden Yards. His popularity had some to do with his friendly personality toward the media and fans, but the tears he would go on throughout the course of the season were a part of it as well. Scott went through stretches as an Oriole when it just seemed like nobody could get him out. Conversely, he also went on some tough stretches where he couldn’t buy a hit, too. READ MORE >>>

I am also the lead writer for the Baltimore Sports Reportr, the Tumblr version of the site. I post daily round-ups, commentary, and tons of pictures, as well as game predictions, recaps, NFL rankings and plenty of opportunities for the fans to give their say. Give us a follow if you’re on Tumblr!

This week’s theme relates mildly to the beauty that was the Ravens’ Week 12 win over the 49ers. I’m not that big of a fan of facial hair, but I am a fan of adventure.
