College Football Kicks Off

College football, the only sport where I don’t like how the champion is determined, begins a new season with a slate of games beginning on Thursday with the immortal matchup of Presbyterian against Wake Forest. That matchup, and many others similar to it, can be found all over the sport’s opening weekend, which is filled with five days of FBS football games. The FBS universe as we know it was on the verge of imploding over the course of a few days in the summer, as teams either made plans to move, made threats to move or planned or announced moves to different conferences. At the end of the shakeup, only a few teams moved, with those moves set to take place (for the most part) next season. So, as we begin to enjoy the last season of FBS football as we know it, a few thumbnail previews of some of the more interesting matchups of the first weekend of the season:

The battle of the trenches on both sides of the ball is crucial to playing well and winning football games. Last year, Maryland struggled on both sides of the line. I have already covered the Maryland offensive line and today, we are gonna get started on the defense with the defensive line.

ACC Football: Searching For National Relevance-Again

Last season, at the beginning of what became the last season for Bobby Bowden as head coach of the Florida State Seminoles, Bowden was asked at ACC media days why the ACC has not been a factor recently in the BCS National Championship chase. Bowden replied in essence that the conference, while competitive from top to bottom and balanced, wasn’t going to have a team challenge for the national title if there wasn’t one great team that could compete at the highest level of FCS football.

Where’s the Beef: Season Preview for the Maryland O Line

I don’t know if any of you remember the commercial for Wendy’s from the mid 80s but with the Maryland offensive line, they make me ask “Where’s the Beef?”  The line last year caused so many disruptions and stalled the offense on multiple occasions.  It finished 110th in sacks allowed and 105th in rushing offense.  The Terps also lost two of their linemen, center Phil Costa and left tackle Bruce Campbell who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders.  With the extra year under their belt, the remaining linemen should improve, I think.  Returning for the Terps are senior Paul Pinegar (6-4, 290), Andrew Gonnella (6-5, 305), and sophomore R.J. Dill (6-7, 300) on the line.  As backups, they have Bennett Fulper (6-4, 295), Justin Lewis (6-3, 315) and Justin Gilbert (6-6, 300) returning.   READ MORE >>>

Are Greivis Vasquez’ NBA Draft Dreams Realized in Motown?

As the basketball season is winding down and the Lakers and Celtics play for the title, teams turn their eyes to free agency and the draft to improve their teams.  Of particular interest for Terps fans are the prospects for Greivis Vasquez. Of course, before we can go into teams that Greivis might fit into we have to know some of Vasquez’s strengths and weaknesses.  As Terps fans and college basketball fans in general can attest, Greivis Vasquez exudes passion for basketball.  Some of the other things Chad Ford, ESPN’s draft insider, states are that he thrives on drives to the hoop, solid passing which can be helpful to play some point guard in the NBA.  Some of the weaknesses are his athleticism (in terms of leaping and speed) and his mid range jumper along with needing to bulk a bit.  Scouts also can’t figure out what position he would fit best at whether it would be as a true point guard or as a combo guard.  With all that said, Greivis figures to grade out as an early to mid second round pick. . . . → Read More: Are Greivis Vasquez’ NBA Draft Dreams Realized in Motown?

Maryland Teams Well Represented in NCAA Lacrosse Tournaments

Another strong showing for Maryland lacrosse, with 4 teams making the 16 team NCAA tournament in Maryland, Loyola, Johns Hopkins, and Mount St. Mary’s. It’s hard to imagine an NCAA tournament without JHU, and they just managed to make the field, likely aided by their reputation as one of the great programs in college lacrosse. On the women’s side, the University of Maryland took the #1 seed with Towson and Navy also making the cut. With such a host of teams to root for, there is no question that Maryland is still the heart of lacrosse country. . . . → Read More: Maryland Teams Well Represented in NCAA Lacrosse Tournaments

What’s In Store for the Terps

As thrilling as the 2009-”10 basketball season was for the University of Maryland, Terps fans cannot help but look forward to next season with a great sense of uncertainty.  The Terps lose 3 seniors in Greivis Vasquez, Eric Hayes and Landon  Milbourne who have not only performed to the best of their ability on the court, but also provided great leadership and effort.  And when you consider that Vasquez was both and all league performer and the heart and soul of the squad, you realize the losses will be great and the outlook is not very rosy.  So what is next for the Terps?  Can the returning players step into the void created by the departing ones?  Will all five members of the incoming recruiting class be ready to contribute as freshman?  Does Gary Williams have it in him to undertake another rebuild at Maryland?  Are the ’09-’10 Terps any better than a bubble team? . . . → Read More: What’s In Store for the Terps

Spartans defeat Terps at the buzzer 85-83

The fourth-seeded Maryland Terrapins used a furious comeback to go ahead of Michigan State 83-82 with just six seconds to go. Then Spartans’ guard Korie Luscious hit a three as time expired, ending Maryland’s season abruptly. This game wasn’t Maryland’s best, as they struggled to rebound the ball and stop Michigan State from making three point baskets. Michigan State was 10-18 from behind the arc, incuding 6-8 from Durrell Summers, and shot a total of 55.2% from the field. . . . → Read More: Spartans defeat Terps at the buzzer 85-83

Scouting the Spartans

Today we have Pete Rossman from the Michigan State fan blog- The Only Colors. Were you surprised that after finishing tied for 1st in the Big Ten regular season that the committee only seeded the Spartans as a 5? I felt that MSU should’ve been a 4, but with the unimpressive way they closed out the season, I really can’t complain about the Spartans falling to a 5. What was disappointing is that they ended up in the Midwest bracket, with one of the worst possible draws – against a hot Maryland team on Sunday, and a possible matchup with Kansas in the Sweet Sixteen… . . . → Read More: Scouting the Spartans
