I keep telling her "stop calling me at work".
A west coast trip for the Nationals, and a car accident: What are the reasons this article is up a day late. Now that I have a rental car (almost) and my brain is slowly starting to re-fire after a good night’s sleep, let’s stare at the Scarlett Johansson picture for a few seconds and then dig in.
Preorder your World Series tickets:
My benchmark for the home stand was 4-2, and the O’s went ahead and upped it to 5-1. Now the real test starts with the brutal schedule I alluded to last week. For the next 6 games, the Orioles will be sampling the various chowders of the Northeast. They then return home to face Texas (currently at their Chuck Norris best), and the Rays (currently atop the division unbeknownst to the people of Tampa).
In numbers you already knew without me telling you, those are the top 4 teams in RBI’s in the American League. I’m not saying temper your expectations, because the Orioles are playing well and you should ride the wave until it flattens out. What I AM saying is, be realistic. There are going to nights that starting pitchers get lambasted because the margin for error will be miniscule and the degree of difficulty will be gigantic. Texas and Boston don’t DO pitching duels just like Earnie Shavers didn’t DO decisions.

The first half was back and forth with both sides holding leads and playing good uptempo basketball. However, the Terps played inspired hoops in the second going on a 20-4 run to open the half and keeping the lead that high until the final buzzer, 82-60. Let’s get to the glowing report card.
Nick Faust A-
Faust started strong with Stoglin and both had awesome games. He finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. He was crucial in the team’s run to start 2nd half. It has been great seeing Faust grow as the season has progressed. The Baltimore product will be a fixture in the Turgeon offense and defense.
Terrell Stoglin A+
Stoglin also had a strong start and finished with 25 points on only 14 shots which is quite efficient. He also chipped in 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. He had a monster game to help pace the team. The Terps will need Stoglin and Faust at their best to catch a break and have a chance against the Heels tomorrow. READ MORE >>>

ACC Tournament First Round
#8 Maryland Terrapins (16-14, 6-10 ACC) VS #9 Wake Forest Demon Deacons (13-17, 4-12ACC)
Thursday, March 8th: Phillips Arena– Atlanta, GA
Leading scorer: MD- Terrell Stoglin: 21.2 ppg
Wake- CJ Harris: 16.8ppg
Last game: MD- lost to UVA 75-72
Wake- lost to GTech 69-62
Outlook:
The ACC Tournament leaves Tobacco Road and heads south for the first time in a few years, however the change of venue should not really effect who plays in the championship, and unfortunately it’s very likely not going to be either of the teams who play in this game. Both Maryland and Wake Forest need to win the ACC Tournament in order to make it to the NCAA Tournament, and they will take the first step towards trying to reach that goal Thursday. The earlier meeting between these two came down the to the wire with the Terps pulling out a six point win at home, but the neutral court makes this game a toss-up. Both teams have some bad losses, no signature wins, and at times both have looked like the worst in the conference. Despite their records, both teams have players who can fill up the score sheet and are capable of carrying their respective teams to a win. Whoever plays better between Stoglin and Harris will likely lead their team to take on UNC in the next round.

The Terps were unable to pull out the victory at home against the Cavaliers at home yesterday unlike the Lady Terps or the Terps wrestling who captured the ACC Tournament title. The Terps basketball team fought valiantly and really showed good effort to come back after being down to the Cavs at halftime 31-22. The Terps clawed back and lost in overtime 75-72. Let’s get to the report card of Sunday’s game.
Sean Mosley A-
Very Good Sean showed up on senior day as he had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 dimes. The only thing to cap the day would have been a W for the lone senior on the Terps squad but alas it was not meant to be.
Terrell Stoglin B+
The Gunner was in very good form pouring in 25 points, 3 steals, and 2 assists. The 25 points assured him of leading the league in scoring and tied for ninth in the country at 21.2 per game. Stoglin actually made more from three point range (5) and the foul line (4) than he did from two point range (3) despite having 16 shots from 2 point range. READ MORE >>>

So the Terps are in Chapel Hill tonight to play North Carolina on senior night. I’m pretty sure it will be a 20 point blowout but I have been known to be wrong before. Let’s see what happens.
Roy Williams has his three walk on seniors starting with Tyler Zeller. UNC has its regular boys at check in table and check in at 17:53 with the score tied at 2. Kendall Marshall is so good with the passing of the rock. He is the key cog to make the Carolina offense work despite everything they have with Harrison Barnes, John Henson, and Tyler Zeller. Beautiful block by Henson on the interior on a shot that looked very open. Under 16 timeout and the Terps trail 8-2. In the early going, the Terps offense looks stagnant and the defense can’t keep their man in front of them which is causing problems.
Carolina traps at half court and the Terps pass it to Bad Sean who proceeds to miss the open 3. Turgeon was assistant under Williams from 89-92 when they were both at Kansas and are good friends. However, Turgeon’s friend is kicking the crap out of him so far at 10-4. Nice steal attempt by Stoglin but he wasn’t able to control it or he would have had an easy layup or slam. Maryland has to take advantage of those opportunites to have a prayer. Henson has six points and 2 blocks already with 13:00 minutes to go. Beautiful alley oop from Marshall to Reggie Bullock and a Terp isn’t even in lane to block it. 16-4 Heels at under 12 timeout. Terps are 2-12 from field and Carolina is 7-14 and the Terps have 4 turnovers.
Bank is open late as Nick Faust hits a trey to cut lead to 16-7. READ MORE >>>

Maryland Terrapins (16-12, 6-8 ACC) At #6 North Carolina Tarheels (25-4, 12-2 ACC)
Wednesday, Feb. 29th– 7pm at Dean E. Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC
Leading scorer: MD- Terrell Stoglin 21.2 ppg
UNC: Harrison Barnes 17.7ppg
Last game: MD- lost to GTech 63-61
UNC- def. UVA 54-51
Outlook:
Well, the greatest month in sports is just around the corner and barring every other team in the ACC not making it to Atlanta for the ACC Tournament, the Terps will once again be watching March Madness just like the rest of us, but certainly North Carolina expects to be playing deep into March. Carolina is 3rd in the country in points scored, and to make matters worse for their opponents, they average almost 46 rebounds per game which is 1st in Division 1 play, and you can expect similar numbers like that on Wednesday night. John Henson and Tyler Zeller are total mismatches for the likes of Weis, Pankey and Len, and both should have no problem recording a double double. North Carolina looks to be rolling and their height inside will likely lead to a deep run to the Final Four. It is likely they will be looking past this game, but truthfully it won’t matter as the Tarheels’ ability to turn it on at any second is enough to beat any opponent.

Go back to the beginning of the ACC hoop season, and all the talk about the conference race focused on North Carolina and Duke. This is not uncommon; seemingly every year one or the other is the favorite in the conference. Then North Carolina suffered a beatdown from Florida State, which was followed by Michael Snaer’s shot heard ’round Tobacco Road as the Seminoles beat Duke. For awhile, the Seminoles looked to break the stranglehold the Tar Heels and Blue Devils had on the regular season conference title.
Then Florida State ran into some problems. Namely, one bad week of basketball featuring losses to Duke at home and to Miami on the road. Because of those losses, Florida State went from having the inside track to the regular season conference title, to third place in the conference race. Which leaves our old friends, North Carolina and Duke, battling it out for the regular season title. Again.
Redundant though it may be, it has to be stated that those two have been without a doubt the two best teams in the conference. And with their performance over the course of the season, they both are in play to receive top seeds in the NCAA tournament, depending on who does what in the next few days. Which means that Saturday’s showdown at Cameron Indoor Stadium (with Duke defeating Wake Forest last night and assuming the Tar Heels defeat Maryland tonight) looms large not just for the conference championship and the ACC tournament top seed, but nationally as well.

Even after his Joe Flacco comments this winter, the Sports Guy just gained a number of fans in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area with the simple changing of a Twitter avatar. Bill Simmons of ESPN’s Grantland.com change his Twitter picture to an icon that reads “Duke Sucks” in reaction to the University’s response to his credential request. The Sports Guy explained.

“Duke wouldn’t credential Grantland for Saturday’s UNC-Duke game. I already hated Duke but was diplomatic about it… no more. IT IS ON!”
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for publicly ripping Duke, but my love/hate relationship with Simmons kind of has me rooting against him on this one. I know that most sports franchises do not honor credential requests from websites, so I’m not surprised that Simmons was shot down by Duke and it’s kind of funny to see him shutout.
But anybody that works in the media that shouts “Duke Sucks” to 1,640,340 people has to receive some love from Maryland, right?

The Terps traveled to Hotlanta and left the ATL with another loss to add to the collection they have gotten throughout the season. The game was back and forth the entire time but the Yellow Jackets (10-18, 3-11) made the plays down the stretch to secure the victory 63-61. The Terps (16-12, 6-8) only had 24 second half points and only shot 34.5% from the field. However there were some bright spots for the team. Let’s take a look at the report card.
Nick Faust B-
Faust had 11 points and was 2-3 from three. However, the Terps had only 7 assists on their 19 field goals. Faust contributed only 2 of the assists. I understand Faust is out of his natural position playing point guard following Pe’Shon’s Howard season ending injury, but the Terps need more than 7 assists. Maybe the Terps need to institute some Norman Dale into their games the last few games of the season.

Maryland Terrapins (16-11, 6-7 ACC) At Georgia Tech (9-18, 2-11 ACC)
Saturday Feb. 25 2:30pm Phillips Arena, Atlanta, GA
Leading scorer: MD – Terrell Stoglin 21.3 ppg
GT – Mfon Udofia 9.8ppg
Last game: MD – def. Miami 75-70
GT – lost to Clem 56-37
Outlook:
I have been trying to think of ways to get people to spend two hours of their Saturday to watch this game but I can’t think of any reason anyone would want to. I am sure we all have something better to do right? Why not make it a Saturday funday and just drink every time Terrell Stoglin puts up a shot?
I wouldn’t recommend that if you had to drive anywhere. If you do decide to watch this game you are likely to see some sloppy basketball and poor offensive execution at some points during the game. Georgia Tech lost their leading scorer Glen Rice Jr. and is coming off a stellar 38 point performance at home against Clemson, so there is no way the Terps can go in there and lose, can they?

Podcast: Play in new window
By Zach Wilt, on February 22nd, 2012

The University of Maryland and Randy Edsall seem to be finding themselves making national headlines for all the wrong reasons.
In case you missed it yesterday, Michael Rosenberg of Sports Illustrated ripped Randy Edsall and the Terps football program for their restrictions on quarterback Danny O’Brien during his attempted transfer to Vanderbilt.
“O’Brien wants to go to Vanderbilt, to play for former Maryland offensive coordinator James Franklin,” Rosenberg wrote. ”Maryland won’t let him, because of jealousies, insecurities and indisputable hypocrisy.”
Harsh words. But ones that alumnus and CBS Sportscaster Bonnie Bernstein agrees seems to agree with.

There are two weeks left in the regular season of the ACC, and certain realities are coming into focus. The conference has a top tier, a second-levelof good but not great teams, and a lower section of mediocre to poor teams. Duke and North Carolina are about where everyone figured they would be at the start of the season. The fact that they have been joined by Florida State comes as a surprise, and it may be even more of a surprise that the Seminoles still hold the tiebreaker over both of the Tobacco Road bluebloods this late in the regular season. That distinction has the possibility to change on Thursday night, as the Blue Devils head down to Tallahassee for the rematch. You can bet that Duke would love nothing more than to avenge the defeat suffered at Cameron Indoor last month. Should the Seminoles get past that game, a Miami Hurricanes squad desperate for another big-time vicgtory will be waiting on Saturday.

Let’s start with the positives of the game which is the fact that they fell down early and were able to rally and come back and take a lead for a bit before being tied with Virginia at 31 at the half. The second was a different story as the Cavs (20-6, 7-5) opened the half on a 16-0 run and outscored the Terps 40-13. The Terps (15-11, 5-7) definitely quit in the second half and didn’t put forth the effort to fight back. Let’s get to the gruesome report card.
Terrell Stoglin scored 14 points all in the first half.
The Terps had 5 field goals total in the second half going 5-24 from the field and 0-6 from deep. They finished with 14 total field goals going 27% from the field. At one point in the second half, Maryland went 8:18 without a field goal.
The Terps finished with 15 turnovers (10 in the second half) so their turnovers doubled their made field goals in the second and finished with more turnovers than made field goals. UVA capitalized outscoring the Terps 22-8 off turnovers.
Maryland made 7 three pointers in the first half to keep them in the game.

The Terps had a strong first half and were able to put away the Eagles at the Comcast Center 81-65. The Terps (15-10, 5-6) were paced by the Terrell Stoglin’s 24 points and Nick Faust with 6 assists and 5 steals. The Eagles (8-18, 3-9) trailed 41-27 at the half but opened the half with the first 6 points. However the Terps responded themselves and went on a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 50-35. The win marked Maryland’s most lopsided win of the season. Let’s get to the report card:
Nick Faust: B+
As stated above, Faust had a career high in assists and steals and did an admirable job filling in for Howard at the point. The five turnovers are a bit disconcerting but he performed well. A strong test will be in store for him on Saturday when the Terps travel to Charlottesville to play Virginia.
Terrell Stoglin: A-
Following the benching and Twitter remarks, people were concerned if Turgeon had lost Stoglin. If the game last night was any indication, the answer is no. He had 24 points and 5 three pointers to help lead the team. With the 5 threes, he passed Gary Junior for the sophomore record. READ MORE >>>
