Ravens Report Card: Breaking down the Baltimore Ravens 2011 season

The 2011 Ravens brought about one of the best seasons in franchise history. They finished the regular season with a 12-4 record en route to the team’s third AFC North title in team history.

They finished 8-0 at home for the first time ever and swept the season series against the Pittsburgh Steelers for the first time since the 2006 season.

They featured a running back in the name of Ray Rice who led the NFL in total yards from scrimmage and brought along a rookie wide receiver in Torrey Smith who finished the season with seven touchdowns, setting a Ravens rookie record. They added a third Defensive Player of the Year award to the mantle with linebacker Terrell Suggs winning this season.

The Baltimore Ravens were two plays away from playing in Super Bowl XLVI, but overall was a season to remember for fans everywhere. Let’s take a final look at the Ravens season unit by unit. READ MORE >>>

Ravens Defense Shuts Down Jets

It took all of two plays for Mark Sanchez to be reminded that the Baltimore Ravens defense is not Oregon State or UCLA.

Haloti Ngata returned an interception for a touchdown as the Ravens jumped out quickly to a 14-0 lead and then held on for a 24-23 win over the New York Jets.

Lost in all the hype surrounding the debut of the former USC quarterback Sanchez was the play of the Ravens second year quarterback from Delaware. Joe Flacco and the first team offense looked sharp as he completed 8-18 pass attempts for 120 yards including a 43 yard pass to Derrick Mason to help set up a short Ray Rice touchdown run.

The Ravens first team looked sharp but the second and third units were far from it. Troy Smith struggled to lead the offense in the second half and Frank Walker was one of several defensive backs targeted by Jets quarterbacks.

The Ravens next preseason game is Saturday at Carolina. Kickoff show begins at 7:00pm with the game to follow at 7:30pm.

Ravens Shut Out Skins

Seven months after walking off the field in Pittsburgh, losers of the AFC Championship game, the Baltimore Ravens took to the field Thursday night ready to begin a new season which they hope leads to Miami.

If a preseason game can count as an indicator, the Ravens looked the part. Joe Flacco, Troy Smith and John Beck led a Ravens offense, which quietly gained 500 total yards. While Greg Mattison’s defense preserved the shut out as the Ravens beat the Redskins 23-0 at M&T Bank Stadium.

While many were hoping to see Joe Flacco take the next step, even if it were only in a preseason game, Troy Smith was outstanding. Smith completed 14/30 passes for 200 yards, including a 19 yard touchdown pass to Justin Harper.

The Ravens defense showed no ill effects from switching from the blitz crazy Rex Ryan, to the more base oriented defense of Greg Mattison. They forced two turnovers, including a Derek Martin interception and a Dwan Edwards fumble recovery.

Even though it was the first preseason game, all 80 Ravens players were able to do what led to success during last years playoff run, physically dominate their opponent. On Thursday night the Redskins were dominated, and the Ravens are off and running.
