Game Notes:
- River Hill wins their third state title in the last five years (2007, 2008, 2011).
- Thomas Johnson commited nine turnovers. The Patriots lost six fumbles, and quarterback Heath Dahlgren threw three interceptions.
- Raamah Vaughn scored three rushing touchdowns and Aaron Wells added two for River Hill, with the two players combining for 274 total yards on the ground (Wells 173, Vaughn 101).
- River Hill running back Evan Griffin accumulated 141 total yards, and scored one rushing touchdown (28 pass, 32 rush, 33 rec, 48 return).
- Brandan Berney was the lone bright spot for Thomas Johnson, scoring two touchdowns and rushing for 84 yards on 19 carries.

The final state championship game of the weekends sees the River Hill Hawks (Howard County) take on the Thomas Johnson Patriots (Frederick County) for the Class 3A championship. The Hawks enter with an 11-2 record, while the Patriots come into the game at 10-3.

Final Score: River Hill 41, Thomas Johnson 13. This one was all River Hill in the second half, as they outscored TJ 28-6 in the second frame. The Patriots did not help themselves whatsoever, committing nine turnovers in the contest.

Score: 43-6
Game Notes:
- Middletown wins their first state title in school history, after losing in last year’s championship game.
- Middletown’s Zach Welch scored three touchdowns and ran for 172 yards, along with kicking a field goal and four extra points.
- Ben Lewis, a Syracuse commit, accumulated 144 total yards (56 rush, 88 receiving) and scored two touchdowns for Middletown.
- Douglass wide receiver Paul Harris accumulated 132 total yards (48 receiving, 84 return).
- Middletown led 16-6 at halftime, and scored 27 unanswered points in the second half to win 43-6.
- Middletown put up 435 total yards, 335 of which were rushing yards.

Dunbar (Baltimore City) vs. Perryville (Cecil County)
Maryland Class 1A State Championship

Winner: Dunbar
Score: 32-11
Game Notes:
- This game was a lot closer than the score. Perryville led 11-8 going into halftime, and trailed by only five points throughout the second half, until Dunbar scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes.
- Dunbar’s Deontay McManus, a West Virginia commit, was held in check all game until he scored a 29-yard rushing touchdown with about two minutes remaining. The touchdown gave the Poets a 24-11 lead, and put the game out of Perryville reach.
- Perryville halfback Ethan Griffin put on a great performance, accumulating 184 total yards (88 rush, 63 receiving, 33 return) for the Panthers.
- The title is Dunbar’s second in a row, and their sixth in the last eight years.

The first of three state title games today pits the Dunbar Poets of East Baltimore against the Perryville Panthers of Cecil County. Dunbar comes into the game with an 11-2 record (one of the two losses came from a forfeit), and Perryville currently sits at 13-0. Dunbar, looking to defend their state title from last season, are considered the heavy favorites.
Last night’s Class 4A game was a thriller, with Old Mill coming back from a 21-0 first half deficit to claim a 36-35 victory in overtime.

Game Notes:
-Old Mill overcame 21-0 deficit
-Rob Chesson successfully ran for a two-point conversion in overtime to win game
-Mark Green (Quince Orchard) rushed for 217 yards on 42 carries with three touchdowns
-Torie Wagner made five catches for 137 yards, scored a 23-yard touchdown on a fumble recovery, and intercepted a pass late in 4th quarter to stifle possible game-winning Quince Orchard drive
-Old Mill wins their second 4A title in three years by one point (17-16 over Henry A. Wise in 2009)

UPDATE: Old Mill wins by a score of 36-35, in double overtime. This game was hyped up to be one of the year’s best, and it certainly delivered. It was almost undoubtedly the best high school football game I’ve ever seen, considering the way it finished, and the high stakes of the occasion.

Even though the Ravens are out of town this weekend, there will still be some great football being played at M&T Bank Stadium.
The four high school state football championships will be this weekend, and three of the games will feature schools from the Baltimore metro area. With one game on Friday night and three on Saturday, the weekend will be packed with the top high school football in the state, all in the friendly confines of the Ravens’ home stadium.
