Broncos trying to keep Steelers fans out of Denver — Good luck with that guys

Ravens fans are all to familiar with the bandwagon invasion of black and yellow (I refuse to say gold — this is gold, this is yellow) that occurs during Steelers week.  Broncos fans are about the endure their own version of the obnoxious stadium takeover and are trying to do everything in their power to keep home crowd in the home team’s colors.

Dr. Ron Cypher, a Steelers fan that travels around the country waiving his towel and obstructing the views of the home town fans, told CBS Pittsburgh that he wasn’t allowed to buy tickets to the Broncos game.  “I got online to get tickets for the playoff game, and I got through the entire checkout process until the end and it said because of my zip code, I would not be allowed to buy tickets from the Denver Broncos,” he said.

Poor guy.

For Broncos head coach John Fox, this limitations are only the begininning of his Keep Denver Beautiful campaign.  ”We’ve got unique fans here; I would encourage all of them to keep their seats so to speak and not sell any of them to Pittsburgh fans,” Fox said.

Quick Hits: Ravens sweep Steelers in 2011 regular season

In week one of the 2011 season the Baltimore Ravens put an embarrassing 35-7 beatdown on the Pittsburgh Steelers.  In week nine they marched into Pittsburgh and put together a come from behind victory that secured their first regular season sweep of the Steelers since 2006.

Heading into their second matchup of the season the Steelers and Ravens appeared to be teams heading in opposite directions.  After a slow start Pittsbugh had put together four straight wins while the Ravens fell flat against the Jaguars and nearly let the Cardinals beat them at home.  But none of that ever seems to matter on Steelers Week.

The Ravens went into Heinz Field, contained Ben Roethlisberger, had a solid game plan on offense and marched 92 yards down the field to score a dramatic game winning touchdown down 20-16 with 2:24 remaining.  Here are my thoughts on the Ravens best win of the 2011 season.

Suggs on Roethlisberger: “God can have his soul, but his ass belongs to me.”

We’re now just a day away from the Baltimore Ravens second meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the 2011 season.  ”Steelers Week,” as we so lovingly call it here in Baltimore, is just about over and nearly all the smack talk has come from Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs.

Suggs’ best line by far came late in the week when he told reporters, “God can have his [Roethlisberger's] soul, but his ass belongs to me.”  That should be on a t-shirt or a motivational poster.  Epic.

So far in 2011 the Ravens have owned the Steelers.  It was a 35-7 blood bath on the season opener that embarrassed their proud NFL franchise and Suggs was right in the middle of it.  As previously pointed out, Suggs has recorded 13.5 sacks, 19 tackles and 8 assists on tackles against the Steelers, the highest against any opponent.

We’ll see if the Ravens can continue to own the Steelers this year or if the AFC North rivals will split their regular season meet ups.  The countdown to kickoff is winding down as “Steelers Week” is about to conclude.

NFL poster boy Troy Polamalu not fined for dirty hit on Wes Welker

The NFL has decided that clean and legal hits like Bernard Pollard’s shot on the Jaguars’ Deji Karim two weeks ago are fineable, but when Troy Polamalu tackles Wes Welker around the neck it’s okay.

If the NFL wants to have any credibility with their strict rule changes then they at least need to be consistent with their fines.  Pollard led with his shoulder and delivered a vicious and legal hit on Karim and was fined $10,000 by the league.  Poster boy and commercial sensation Troy Polamalu grabs Welker around the neck and injures him and he gets nothing.  Ridiculous.

Ravens Week 9 Preview: Don’t be Impressed by Pittsburgh

Its Pittsburgh Week here at BSR and even with emotions running high throughout the site, By the Numbers will try to remain objective. That’s right, the headline of this article is not meant to be some clever shot at Steelers fans. Instead its a summary of an analytical argument that doesn’t over-rate Pittsburgh’s Week 8 win against the New England Patriots. The first thing to note is that despite the win, Pittsburgh dropped from the #11 ranked team to the #12 ranked team by Football Outsider’s DVOA. Furthermore, its important to note that while Pittsburgh won, they hardly dominated the Pats. In particular, the Steelers’ offense slowed down in the fourth quarter, converting just one 1/4 third downs and losing yardage on two big sacks that gave the Patriots a chance to comeback with 30 seconds left.

Don't be overly impressed by the Steelers Week 8 win over the Pats.

Despite missing two practices, Ngata expected to play Sunday against Steelers

All week long Baltimore has read the reports of the Steelers injuries heading into week nine against the Ravens.  James Harrison tweeted that he will be sidelined and all indications are that LaMarr Woodley and Hines Ward will also likely be out for the Steelers.

But the health of Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata is beginning to become a growing concern for Baltimore.

Ngata missed Wednesday and Thursday’s practices with a thigh injury.  A league source did tell Aaron Wilson that Ngata expects to play Sunday.

With Ngata’s help in week one, the Ravens forced Ben Roethlisberger to throw three interceptions and fumble four times.  He’s one of the center pieces of the Ravens defense.  Hopefully the team is just being cautious with him, the Ravens need him to suit up.

Grubbs return is crucial against the Steelers defense

Either the Ravens are trying to withhold information from the Pittsburgh Steelers or they could actually be getting guard Ben Grubbs back for week nine.  Hopefully it’s the latter.

Grubbs is reportedly a game-time decision according to offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.  He has been sidelined since a toe injury since the last time the Ravens faced the Steelers, in week one on September 11.

It’s easy to joke about a toe injury, but for offensive lineman they can play a crucial part in their success on the field.  Turf toe essentially ended Jonathan Ogden’s career.

The Ravens offensive line could certainly use Grubbs back at guard.  Joe Flacco has taken a beating without him as he has been sacked 15 times over the past seven weeks.

Suggs: I like being the bad guy going into Heinz Field

If there’s one guy that never shies from controversy it’s Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs.  Last week he was baffled by the offensive game plan, much like the rest of city, this week he’s already taking shots at Pittsburgh.

“I look forward to going into Heinz Field as the bad guy,” Suggs told Aaron Wilson after coming off the field on Sunday.  Yeah, you read that right.  Minutes after the Ravens defeated the Cardinals 30-27 at M&T Bank Stadium, Suggs was already preparing for the Steelers and a week of jawing back and forth between the two AFC North Rivals.

Though the Ravens are 6-7 against Pittsburgh in Suggs’ nine years in the league, his personal performances against the Steelers are outstanding.  Suggs has recorded 13.5 sacks, 19 tackles and 8 assists on tackles against the Steelers, the highest against any opponent.  In week one, he recorded three sacks and five tackles in the Ravens 35-7 pounding of the Steelers.

If there’s one guy that can back up the smack talk, it’s T-Sizzle.  I’m fine with him being the bad guy.

Ravens open as three point underdogs to Steelers in Week 9

Vegas has set early lines for the NFL’s week nine matchups and the Baltimore Ravens find themselves as three point underdogs as they head to Pittsburgh to face the Steelers.

As every Ravens fan knows, Baltimore embarrassed Pittsburgh in week one with 35-7 beatdown at home in a game that seemed to completely catch the Steelers off guard.

However, in recent weeks these AFC North rivals seem to be going in opposite directions.  The Ravens lost an ugly game in Jacksonville on Monday Night Football two weeks ago and squeaked out a win with seconds remaining against the Cardinals while the Steelers beat up on Arizona on the road and beat the Patriots at home.

I expect to see the line get closer as the week progresses, but so far Vegas doesn’t seem to remember September 11, 2011.

Expect less dirty play, James Harrison ruled out for Sunday versus Ravens

Steelers personal fouls will be limited in week nine against the Ravens as Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison tweeted that he will not be playing on Sunday Night.

“Saw the doctor today. Looks like I won’t be playing this weekend but at least I’m cleared for practice. Worst case scenario I’ll be back after the bye for sure,” Harrison wrote.

Last year, James Harrison racked up $100 K in fines for dirty hits.  This week the Ravens wide receivers don’t need to worry about any helmet to helmet hits or cheap shots as Harrison is sidelined as he recovers from surgery for a fractured orbital socket.

Ow.

Quick Hits: Ravens dig huge hole, climb out against Cardinals

At first I was disappointed that Todd Heap was inactive for today’s game against his former team, the Ravens, but then I came to the conclusion that being sidelined with a hamstring injury was fitting for his return to Baltimore.  Nothing against Todd, he’s proven he’s a good dude, but the guy was always plagued by injuries during his tenure here.

All joking aside, this game was atrocious.  If you’re a Ravens fan that says a ‘win is a win’ or somehow found heroics in this comeback than this post isn’t for you.  This may be the only time that I tell you to click away from something I’ve written. Although we have lots of other great content for you right here on BSR.

For thirty minutes the Ravens embarrassed themselves again.  They let a weak NFC team push them around and made boneheaded mistakes that put them in a 24-6 hole at the halfway point.  Did they squeak out a win?  Yeah.  But it’s nothing to be proud of after the 12-7 snooze fest loss they performed in Jacksonville on Monday Night Football just a week ago.  If you’re not sick of my poor attitude yet, here are my thoughts on the Baltimore Ravens 30-27 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

Matt Birk says his knee feels fine

Regardless of how healthy Ravens center Matt Birk is, he’s going to start for Baltimore on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The veteran offensive lineman told Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times that his knee feels good.

Matt Birk on his knee: ‘Feel good I don’t like to do the percentages or anything I’ll keep treating it and feel as good as I can come Sundayless than a minute ago via web Favorite Retweet Reply

The Ravens signed another veteran center, Andre Gurode, last weekend.  Some are saying that Gurode could eventually replace even a healthy Matt Birk.

Troy Polamalu waives the white flag, claims Ed Reed is NFL’s best safety

And so it’s settled.

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu has waived the white flag and proclaimed that Ed Reed is the best player in their position in the National Football League.

You heard it hear first…

Well technically it was buried in a story on NFL.com about Polamalu’s contract talks

“I’ve always considered Ed Reed to be the best safety in the NFL and perhaps ever,” Polamalu said. “So, we can clear that up right away. But the truth about it is that defenses always come down to how the secondary plays. So, whatever defense plays best in this game, usually comes out with the win.”

Of late this argument hasn’t even been worth bringing up. Polamalu got scorched by the Packers wide receivers in the Super Bowl as his defense allowed Aaron Rodgers’ offense to score three touchdowns in the air.  The once dominant safety couldn’t keep up with Jordan Nelson, Greg Jennings or James Jones the entire game as Pittsburgh’s defense allowed 304 yards passing to the Packers.

Tom Zbikowski gets the start at strong safety versus Pittsburgh

Your starting strong safety, Tommy Z!

The Ravens depth chart against the Steelers on Sunday has begun to filter out.  To the surprise of some, Tom Zbikowski is listed as the the Ravens starter at strong safety over newcomer Bernard Pollard.

“‘It feels great. I’ve been looking forward to playing alongside Ed [Reed],” Zbi told Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times.

Though Pollard impressed many in the Ravens organization, Edward Lee of The Sun thinks that Zbikowski’s “familiarity with the defense’s schemes” gave him the edge.

I’m surprised by the move because I was more impressed by Pollard in preseason play as he recorded a sack and an interception in two games, but then again I don’t see practices.  I guess that offseason boxing propelled Zbi into the starting role.

Pittsburgh paper says Ravens are “cause for concern”

How about that?  A little love from the Pittsburgh paper.  Earlier this week Grantland’s Bill Barnwell listed the Ravens among his “teams who will fail to meet expectations” this season.  In his worst case scenario, Barnwell said that the Ravens could slip behind the Browns in the AFC North.  The Browns?  Really Barnwell?

Not even the Pittsburgh papers are buying what Barnwell is selling on Grantland.  Ralph N. Paulk of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is calling the Ravens “a cause for concern” for the Steelers in week one.  Despite Pittsburgh’s dominance over the Ravens the past three seasons, Paulk cited a few quotes from Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin that hinted that he may be a bit more worried this go around than in years past.

“I’m probably a little more uneasy as usual when we play these guys because they’ve got so many new guys that we have to account for,” Tomlin said.  ”At this juncture in this series, they probably know more about us than we know about them.”
