The Terps were desperate for a win yesterday and couldn’t come through. The past two games the Terps played were in the rain and having wonderful weather yesterday the Terps were hoping for a tunraround. Things were going there way in the first half, but unfortunately, they came away with a loss losing 38 – 31.
The Terps had a tough time with the Wolfpack on all sides of the ball yesterday. Again, their defense was lit up for 300+ yards passing. The Terps were able to come away with three picks, but couldn’t capitalize on all of them. The defense also couldn’t stop the run as they gave up over 100 yards rushing to the Wolfpack as a team.
The offense struggled as well. Their running game was suspect and they had nothing in the passing game. What made things worse was Turner getting hurt mid way through the second quarter. The injury may not be as bad as it looked, but the Terps are going to be without Turner for the next game or possibly the rest of the year. Turners replacement, Jamaar Robinson came in and struggled until the last possesion of the game. He was able to run the ball and move the offense downfield eventually stalling at midfield. Jamaar is exciting to watch, but he needs to improve his passing before becoming a more coplete threat. The running game did show some flashes of potential with Caleb Porzel breaking a few long runs. Meggett was ineffective and without the running game, they weren’t table to open up the passing game.
Some of the few bright spots saturday came with an interception return for a touchdown by the Maryland defense and special teams had a kick return for a touchdown. Maryland received output from all phases of their team but none could put them over the top.
With this loss, Maryland has now lost all possible opportunity for a bowl game. The Terps probably weren’t going to make a bowl game anyhow and they would have had to win out for any chance, but they did have a slight chance coming into this game with the Wolfpack. Now the Terps head to College Park to play Virginia Tech, a team that is still in the hunt for the divison title and looking for as many wins as possible right now.

WOW! What a game for the Terps Saturday. This was a roller coaster that will have all Terp fans mad, aggravated, excited, relieved all within a span of three and a half hours. The Terps started with 11 yards offense and no first downs in the first quarter. Midway through the second, they had a first down and just after that, their first score of the game. By the end of the half they took a commanding lead 17 – 13.
The second half started well with Maryland taking advantage of a short kick and returning it to the one. The terps easily pushed their way into the end-zone and went up 24 – 13. The Terps looked to be cruising to a win, just before things began to get a little shaky in the fourth quarter. With about 6 minutes left in the game, Maryland was faced with 4th and 1 at their own 29 yard line. Turner went for a QB sneak and came up short. It resulted in a Turnover on downs at the Maryland 29 which meant Clemson could’ve just ran the ball three times and kicked a field goal to tie. Luckily, Maryland’s defense held and when Clemson went to tie the game with a field goal, they missed, giving the ball back to Maryland . The Terps at this point have just under four minutes to play and all they had to do is run the ball and get one first down. On the first play, Meggett carries and fumbles the ball on their own 31. Maryland’s defense again holds and forces a field goal attempt. For a second time, Clemson misses their field goal and Maryland escaped another potential disaster. At this point, there is a little less than 3 minutes left on the game clock and Maryland again cannot move the ball and are forced to punt to Clemson with about a minute and a half left in the game. This time, things looked like they were going to end favorably for Clemson. Parker started moving the ball down field with crisp passes and getting to the Maryland 28. This time though Marylands defense comes through and forces Parker to fumble on a sack by Demetrius Hartsfield – Game over.
I’ve seen five games so far and Maryland really scares me. They turn the ball over way too much to have a winning season. The defense did stop Clemson this weekend and Maryland out-gained them 284 – 274, but their inability to make plays when it matters most could be their biggest down fall. Next up is Wake Forest and they need to have a good game on the offensive side of the ball in order to control the game. Otherwise, Maryland’s defense will be over worked.

The Terps were looking to right the ship on Saturday against the Rutgers only to see their hopes squashed. The played tough for about a quarter and then started giving it away like it was candy. The Terps come away with a 34 – 13 loss that hurts in many ways.

Terps has come out the past few weeks and has made strides defensively. They barely give up any rushing yards and have become more consistent in the pass defense. They still give up a few points here and there, but if their offense wasn’t so careless on the field, maybe the defense wouldn’t have been in those positions to give up the points. They have definitely made it easy for themselves in terms of areas they need to work on and that is holding on to the ball. Their punt returner, quarterback and running backs all need extra work this week. All of them have given the opponents extra chances to score and that’s not going to win you any games. They may have a winning record right now if they couldn’t kept their turnovers down.
The Terps move into their ACC schedule and it is not going to get any easier. ACC is by far a Football power house of a conference, but ACC teams will definitely exploit your weaknesses if you have any. If Maryland is looking for the time to step up and become more consistent, they need to do it now.

I just have to get this out of the way, this is going to be a long season for the Terps. The Terps avoided an 0 – 2 start for the season, but it was the way they avoided the 0–2 mark that concerns me. The Terps did hang around and were able to make a few plays in the end to get the win they needed.
Yesterday the Terps won 38 – 35 on an overtime field goal by true freshman Nick Ferrara. This was a lucky one though as the Terps cost themselves the lead after a few turnovers, one in particular, a fumbled punt for the second game in a row. After the fumble, momentum seemed to shift to the Dukes. For much of the first half though, the Terps were able to move the ball with short passes and runs by both Scott and Turner. Scott didn’t eclipse the century mark in yards and he seemed to be a non-factor towards the end of the game. Megget was even worse, ending with 11 yards and seemed to be stuffed behind the line more times than not. Not sure what coach Friedgen needs to do, but Maryland needs to get a running game going if they want to compete with the remaining teams on their schedule.
The defense for the second week in a row was bad. The Terps gave up close to 300 yards rushing and this was supposed to be a redefined defense under coach Don Brown. I can understand the defense is young only returning 4 starters, but these guys have got to get their heads in the game. There were missed assignments and no containment on JMU’s rushing game. There was something else missing, this team has yet to create a turnover against their opponents. Turnovers are pivitol and might help this defense build some confidence.
The Dukes are a division 2 team, but they have great coaching and have been in post-season play for the past few years. This was a team Maryland was supposed to beat, but not overlook and it felt like they overlooked the Dukes. Next week the Terps play Middle Tennessee, a team that dominated the Terps last year. The one thing they have going for them is there kicker. Ferrara is a true freshman, but he looks confident out there and he is perfect on the season so far. Maybe some of his confidence will rub off on the defense.

Sometimes the odds makers are off but it’s very rare that they are. All week the Terps were trying to be motivated by being a 21 point underdog. Seems though, they left all their motivation in College Park. 21 points was soft as the Terps were handed one of their most lopsided losses.

The Terps were hoping for the same results as last year when they went out and dominated the Golden Bears. This year was different. The Terps didn’t seem ready. Their defense looked like Division 2 and their offense couldn’t convert when they closed in on the Cal 20 yard line.
From the start, Marylands offensive line seemed overmatched. The defensive line of the Golden Bears continually pushed back on the Terps causing Turner to rush his passes. For the first half, Turner was sacked 5 times and never looked comfortable in the pocket. For most of the first half, Scott could not get good reads and couldn’t get any good runs. Megget was even worse seemingly getting pounded as he reached the line. There wasn’t anything to combat the defensive rush such as screen passes. They needed something to keep Cal honest, but it never happened. Maryland converted on many short passes and had a few drives going, but as they crept closer to Cal’s end zone, nothing ever produced.
Maryland’s defense was bad. They were pushed all over the field in the first half, eventually trailing 31 – 6 at half. Cal’s Heisman Trophy candidate Jahvid Best torched the Terps defense for 137 yards and two touchdowns. This was only a piece, a large one at that, of Cal’s total rushing effort totaling more than 240 yards. Maryland talked all week of stepping up and making a statement against a ranked team. This year was obviously different. The Golden Bears were out for revenge from last year’s loss to the Terps . Last year, the Terps played at home and put up strong defense to stop a high scoring offense from moving the ball for the first three quarters.
Next week the Terps get a little reprieve with JMU coming to town. That’s not to say this will be a cakewalk as the Dukes have been competitive the past five years in their own division. If the Terps overlook this one, they may be in a two game hole they did not expect. This game next week will do good for the confidence of the Terps and could right the ship for the following few weeks.
