The Washington Capitals have announced that they have fired head coach Adam Oates and Vice President/General Manger George McPhee. In two seasons with the Washington Capitals, over 130 games, Adam Oates led the Washington Capitals to a 65-48-17 record. After an impressive debut season which saw the Washington Capitals finish with a 27-18-3 regular season record and the distinction of being the last team to win the Southeast Division, the Washington Capitals had an extremely disappointing 2013-2014 season. Most of the blame fell to Oates, and rightfully so.
During George McPhee’s tenure as Vice President and General Manager, the Washington Capitals:
- Made six consecutive playoff appearances (2007-2008 to 2012-2013)
- Won seven Southeast Division championships (1999-00, 2000-01, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2012-13)
- Won the Presidents’ Trophy (2009-2010)
- Made their first ever Stanley Cup appearance (1997-1998)
George McPhee is the only General Manager that Ted Leonsis has ever had. It should be interesting to see where the Capitals go from here, as they need to hire a brand new head coach and general manager/vice president.
