Bill Ladsen on MLB.com announced that the O’s and outfielder Adam Jones have agreed upon a 1 year deal. This agreement will keep Jones and the Orioles from having to go through salary arbitration. The deal is worth $3.25 million.
Are the O’s playing with fire by not locking Jones up long-term?
I've never understood how the whole process works. How many years do the Orioles still have control over Jones? I agree the risk they run is that salaries will probably only escalate, so in that sense, you're right it doesn't make sense.
Risk?
Teams have players under their control for 6 years before they become free agents.
3 years before they are arbitration eligible. This was his first year of arbitration eligibility.
They aren't playing with fire considering Jones hasn't shown he's worth a long term deal.
The Orioles have control of him through the 2013 season.
And one other thing.
He made 465,000 last season.
3.25 Million is a nice healthy raise.
