For Kelly Talavou, 2009 was the season that almost wasn’t. Going into training camp, there were some who didn’t expect this 340 lb giant to make the cut. Talavou had yet to see any game time before in his previous 2 seasons. His first season was spent on the practice squads of Atlanta and Seattle. In 2008, he signed with the Ravens only to be injured throughout the season.
Kelly did however make the team, yet he was only active for 5 games. He was a NT and that role was being filled by a rotation of Kelly Gregg, Haloti Ngata, and Justin Bannon. The Ravens felt like they need him as a security measure. It wasn’t until Week 15, that Talavou played the line and recorded his first tackle. He followed up 2 weeks later by recording 2 solo tackles against the Raiders. That was it. He was inactive for the 2 playoff games.
2010 Projection- I just don’t see how Talavou makes this team. With the addition of Terrence Cody and a healthy Brandon McKinney, Talavou is going to be pushed down on the depth chart. The biggest question I have is whether or not the Ravens will give him a chance to find work elsewhere or do they keep him as insurance throughout the preseason.
