O’s starter Brad Bergesen told the media tonight that he is currently suffering from a shoulder injury that occurred during an Orioles commercial shoot in December. Bergesen will report to Spring Training a few days behind the rest of the pitchers and catchers, but Andy MacPhail and the Orioles are confident that he will be ready by Opening Day.
The commercial featured Bergesen pitching in a batting cage at Camden Yards. Bergesen told Orioles trainers that he ‘tweaked it’ as they finished shooting. He had an MRI done in January and has been in a throwing program in Sarasota.
Bergy was shut down last season after taking a line drive off the leg on July 30th. He hasn’t thrown off the mound since and blames a tight arm for the injury.
I wouldn’t guess that this injury is a big deal. Andy MacPhail has known about it since December and hasn’t brought anyone in to replace him in the rotation.
What do you think?
I think that Bergy provides more innings than the guy that replaces him (D. Hernandez), but I think Hernandez could end up having a stronger year. Anything that might give Hernandez a slight advantage this year might be a good thing.
I don't think the injury will be serious either, but just reminds you how easily pitchers can go down. The next pitch can always be their season or career. Let's just hope he does not push too hard to try to catch up and hurt something else. While it is exciting to have so many youngsters in the rotation again this year, the Orioles will need depth behind Matusz, Tillman and Bergy. I don't see any of them pitching more than 185-200 innings this year.
I was disappointed when Bergesen went down on July 30th and never came back. It takes a long time for these guys to rehab injuries. Hopefully this is nothing more than we're hearing, 10 days.
You gotta be kidding me?!?! The guy injured his shoulder making a commercial?!?!
"The production company that came in wanted it to be as realistic as possible. And I was trying to please and I got caught up in a moment."
You can't make stuff like this up.
Look folks, ANY time you are dealing with a shoulder it's time to be alarmed. Andy talk from McPhail to Bergy is just that, talk.
Does anyone honestly trust the O's medical staff?
This is just ANOTHER example of the idiocy that goes on at the warehouse. Where is the oversight?
I say it is more than likely that Bergy starts the season on the DL and once that happens, who knows where it leads.
The whole situation is beyond ridiculous and there is NO excuse for it.
Hey, Cal broke a nose while having a team picture taken once, so give the kid a break. While he was a more than pleasant surprise for a few months last season, its not like his nickname is ever gonna be "Ace". Seems to me Middle River's Dave Johnson and Mexican Leaguer Rodrigo Lopez and one Ken Dixon all had promising opening years before the league caught up to them. Only 65 K's in 123 IP is not indicative of much upside. This could actually be a case of addition by subtraction if it turns out he misses significant time. Speaking of lunch bets from a different thread, I got one here saying Bergeson's ERA is north of 4.30 if he gets 100 IP or more in 2010 in the Bigs.
The O's medical staff was not there during the production of the commercial…You can bet that this is going to change from here on out though.
