After splitting their first two games with the Braves, the O’s sent Brad Bergesen to the mound today to win the series. Bergy brought his 3-2 record and 4.04 ERA into today’s game and squared off against Derek Lowe.
The Birds looked to even up their home stand record at 3 wins and 3 losses and hoped to keep the sleeping giant that is Chipper Jones silent. Jones was 0 for 9 in the series entering today’s game and 0 for 18 in his last 4 games.
I’ve got to admit I was upset when I saw the that Ty Wigginton was starting at 3rd base over Melvin Mora who had 3 hits last night. But his 2 homers helped changed my mind. Wiggi finished 3 for 4 with a career high 4 runs scored and 3 RBIs.
Baltimore added two more runs in the 2nd with Brian Roberts‘ RBI single and Robert Andino stole home when B-Rob got caught in a run down. Andino is the first Oriole since Corey Patterson on May 23, 2007 to steal home. He put Baltimore up 5-0.
Today the Orioles were making up for lost time. After walking Robert Andino with the bases loaded in the 3rd, Derek Lowe was done. Then Brian Roberts hit a sac fly and the Birds went on top 7-0.
Felix Pie came through in the 4th with an RBI single up the middle and Robert Andino brought two more across the plate with his second double of the year that have the Birds double digits in the run column.
While the offense heated up Brad Bergesen had another nasty start on the hill. Bergy had a shutout through 7 innings and only surrendered 5 total hits. The 2 runs both came from solo homers from David Ross in the 7th and 9th innings. Bergesen is now 4-2 and pitched the Orioles first complete game win since Chris Waters last season.
