“I think we’re going to keep working on it until we get something done,” Showalter said. “Usually those things have a way of working themselves out.”
To no one’s surprise, the Birds declined their half of Markakis’ mutual $17.5 million option for 2015 and have until Monday night to tender him a one-year, $15.3 million qualifying offer. He’ll hit the free agent market on Tuesday morning if the two sides can’t reach a deal before 11:59 PM.
My gut tells me they will — for whatever that’s worth.
All of this news came out of the annual KidsPeace 5K race on Saturday. More than 1,000 people participated in the event. The Showalters, who received strong support despite the weather, raised more than $100,000 for foster care programs.
