The Washington Capitals have called up left-handed defenseman Nate Schmidt from Hershey and reassigned defenseman Connor Carrick and center Michael Latta to Hershey. Schmidt is expected to make his NHL debut Saturday night against the Colorado Avalanche. Carrick was sent down to Hershey to get more playing time and to further develop his skills. Latta was sent down for cap reasons (John Erskine is listed as day-to-day). The Capitals were considering calling up Dmitri Orlov, but Orlov has pink eye. Adam Oates has announced that Michal Neuvirth will be starting against the Avalanche, which is interesting because Semyon Varlamov will be in net for the Avalanche. The two used to be teammates in Washington, and competed fiercely for playing time. Varlamov was traded for a 1st round pick just before the 2011-2012 season.

Dave – what do you think is the cause for the Caps continued woes in starting the season so slow?
Defense has been very sub-par. They’re allowing too many easy shots. Team in general is taking way too many penalties. Hard to get things going when you’re consistently playing a man down.
Offense seems to just be unlucky- getting good shots, they’re just not getting in. 28.3 shots for per 60 minutes on 5-on-5 (18th in the league), 32.2 shots against per 60 minutes on 5-on-5 (9th in the league). Second line has been unproductive so far so I think a change is needed on that line. Erat has been playing like a second liner with limited minutes, so I think he should be moved up to the second line.
