The Washington Capitals have announced that they have signed forward Jason Chimera to a two year, $4 million extension. He will be paid $2 million each season starting in the 2014-2015 season. I like this deal for several reasons:
- Jason Chimera is a very solid third line forward who, in a pinch, could be a short-term option as a top six forward.
- Jason Chimera is valuable to the Capitals’ special teams, as he has arguably been the Capitals’ third best forward on penalty kills. That might not sound impressive, but when you consider that Brooks Laich, Michael Latta (both are better than Chimera on the PK in my opinion), and Troy Brouwer, that’s pretty impressive. That’s not taking anything away from Bouwer either- Brouwer has been very good on the PK this year as well.
- Jason Chimera provides the Capitals with a veteran presence. He knows how to go about preparing for games, knows what it takes to win, and knows how to handle the stress of being an NHL player. Since the Capitals will be importing quite a few younger players over the next two seasons, having Chimera around will help make the transition easier for them. Not to mention Chimera is a class act who never tries to duck the media.
Jason Chimera’s extension isn’t that expensive either, so even if guys like Riley Barber, Andre Burakovsky, or Kuznetsov wind up making Chimera expendable, the Capitals shouldn’t have much trouble trading him.
Just PLEASE don’t ever grow hair again Chimera. Because this is outright creepy.
