You knew someone would retaliate for David Steckel’s vicious hit on Sidney Crosby in the Winter Classic. That guy was Tim Wallace in the third period of Washington’s 3-0 shutout of the Penguins. While Steckel isn’t known for fighting, he’s been in just five in the last four seasons, he held his own against Wallace. Dan Steinberg of D.C. Sports Bog collected quotes from Steckel’s fighting teammates about whether is was awkward watching him fight.
- John Erskine: “I don’t know, I’ve seen Semin fight, so….” “Those guys wanted him for some reason, and he took the challenge. And he hung in there, threw some punches and did well for himself.”
- Matt Hendricks: “Maybe when you guys aren’t around.”
- Matt Bradley: “If you’ve seen me fight, I don’t think I should be giving anybody tips.”
- D.J. King: “You kind of knew it was going to happen. He did his job well. I thought it was good. He’s just a big body, right, so he can just kind of stretch him out.”
Steckel told Steinberg that he’s not good at fighting. “I don’t know. I thought I did all right,” he said.
