If you remember last season, every field goal, extra point, and punt was an adventure with Matt Katula suffering from an injury. 2010 brought Morgan Cox and much smoother special teams operations.
Well, those days are over, at least with Morgan Cox, as he suffered a season ending ACL injury on Sunday.
The Ravens will try out long snappers today and sign one before Wednesday’s practice.
“He’s got a torn ACL and he’s got a third degree sprain of his MCL, so he’s out for the year,” Harbaugh said. “Like we said after the game, that was our fear. He managed to play through that. Willis McGahee would have been our long snapper and Willis does a great job, but we’d rather have Morgan Cox or a professional long snapper doing that job.
“It would have been tough to win the game without him. And for him to gut it out the way he did was probably one of the keys to the victory. So, I’m really proud of his gutsy performance.”
Are you worried?
Really? EVERY field goal, extra point, and punt was an adventure with Matt Katula last season?? He had maybe half a dozen snaps that weren't in a perfect spot late in the season. How many of those skipped off the ground or went over the holder's/punter's head? NONE. Watch any NFL game and see how many snaps the holder/punter has to reach for. And now you've got a situation where an undersized Cox has a season-ending injury in his first year. The Ravens just wanted to dump Katula's salary along with him. Well, he's got the last laugh now playing for the Patriots, where he'll probably earn a Super Bowl ring.
I did say "suffering from an injury."
Later in the season, everything was crazy. Don't you remember the last couple games? My heart was beating during each kick and deservedly so…..
