The Baltimore Sun has confirmed the speculation that Maryland Football coach Ralph Friedgen is out as the Terps coach in 2011. According to their source, Friedgen was “told” he will not return next season.
Maryland football coach Ralph Friedgen has been told by the university that he cannot coach the team next season, according to officials familiar with the situation.
Friedgen has been asked to retire, but the coach, in his 10th season, has not agreed to do that, sources say. If he continues to decline to retire, that leaves Maryland with the option of forcing him out and buying out the final season of his roughly $2 million-a-year contract.
This almost reminds me of the 1997 season when Davey Johnson was named Manager of the Year and was forced to step down.
I understand that Maryland's football team is losing money, but how does a change of coach improve their bottom line. Is Leach or whoever it is bringing season ticket holders with him?
Dilfer wins the Super Bowl and then isn't signed the following year…
2009 was tough to endure and 2010 isn't all about Friedgen. If Robinson had been starting all season, the Terps may have had a .500 record at best and this probably would've been a no brainer move. Friedgen has always had these decent little players here and there and could never get them over the top. His teams would always be just "ok."
It's time for some new blood. Friedgen brought Maryland into the discussion again and now someone else needs to come in and bring Maryland to the next level. I don't have any problems with this other than the AD doesn't know which way to go. A month ago Friedgen was the guy and now he's not – Anderson needs to be decisive.
It was handled poorly, but I think you're right. It is time for new blood.
