Orioles Magic returned to Camden Yards on Thursday night in the form of an epic Matt Wieters walk-off grand slam. The Birds entered their first extra-inning game of 2013 tied with the Rays, 6-6. Nick Markakis singled to right field, Manny Machado reached base on an amazing bunt single and Adam Jones loaded the bases on a single to right field.
Joe Maddon added a fifth infielder in an attempt to get Matt Wieters to ground into a double play. Instead, the Orioles catcher hit the first pitch Brandon Gomes threw to him 376 feet for the game winner.
The GIFs are cool, but I can’t get over this Nick Markakis photobomb.
Wieters is hitting .342 with 13 home runs in his career against Tampa Bay. He becomes the first Oriole to hit a walk-off grand slam since Harold Baines did on May 4, 1999 against the Chicago White Sox.
Saw a Tweet on this last night….
Maybe Maddon should have tried a 5 man outfield, putting one outfielder up in section 96 and another in the flag court.
Maybe the next time the O’s and (Devil) Rays get together, Joey M. should intentionally walk the entire team…Davis, AJ, Manny, Matt own him or simply forfeit the games. Go O’s!
