Maryland escaped with a 75-74 in the second game of the regional round of the 2K Sports Classic Coaches vs. Cancer against College of Charleston coached by an old nemesis, Bobby Cremins who was the head coach at Georgia Tech from 1981-2000. With 8:36 to go in the game, College of Charleston was up 8. However, Maryland was able to cut the lead to 74-73 with 11 seconds left and had the ball with a chance to win.
In the huddle, Gary called a screen-roll with Pe’Shon Howard (14 points) and Jordan Williams and to have Cliff Tucker (15 points) and Sean Mosley as secondary options. But, College of Charleston defended it well. Howard improvised and took it to the rim and after a pretty spin move, he drained a short jumper with 4.6 seconds left. With the final shot, Andrew Goudelock (27 points, 10 rebounds) had a three bank off the back of the iron and Maryland was able to celebrate at Comcast Center with their second win of the season.
Gary was asked after the game about Jordan Williams’ monster night of 26 points, 15 boards and he said, “We had an edge in that position. That was our strength. In the second half we got the ball into him. Jordan is a better player this year and he was able to take advantage of the mismatch. But they (College of Charleston) were certainly able to take advantage in the backcourt.”
After another slow start by the Terps, Williams said, “I was disappointed the way we started the game. We have a veteran group of guys in terms of having been here before and having played on a good team before. They just haven’t gotten off to good starts the first two games.” After being down 8 midway through the first half, Maryland was able to tie it up at 37 at the half. However, to Gary’s point, you may have some veterans (Tucker, Mosley, Gregory, Williams) but they are playing in new roles and have to adjust. Maryland finished 5-18 from the foul line and had 18 turnovers which is lower than the Seattle game but still a lot. Free throws and turnovers are crucial to correct as the season goes along. Although Maryland struggled, they did find a way to gut out a win.
