It looks like the O’s will replace one grizzled voice with another grizzled voice. This is from a recent Jeff Zrebiec piece on the Baltimore Sun…
According to multiple sources, the network is negotiating with former Orioles pitcher and top executive Mike Flanagan to serve as a game analyst. Flanagan would replace Buck Martinez, who left MASN to become part of the Toronto Blue Jays’ broadcasting team.
This is not surprising. He’s done the job before, and there is no reason he cannot do it again.
What is more shocking was this news.
Sources also said MASN is discussing roles for Brady Anderson, Mike Boddicker and Eddie Murray to be part of the broadcasting team on a part-time basis.
I’d really be interested to see how they were used.
What do you think about all this?
Flanagan obviously has pictures of Orioles' brass in compromising positions. Coach? Sucked. Assistant GM? Really sucked. Announcer? Sucked. Now he's back again?!?! Cmon MAN.
I am not surprised at all that Anderson is in line for a gig with the team.
He's been on the airwaves around here acting like Peter Angelos in an innocent bystander in the destruction of this once proud franchise.
Mark,
You ever wonder what happened to Angelos? He comes to town a conquering hero after the Eli Jacobs' reign. Under his watch they bring in Palmeiro (the first go around, not the second time), Roberto Alomar, Mike Bordick, what a breath of fresh air…The Orioles go to the playoffs two straight years under Pat Gillick, and then what happened?
Now I realize while all this was going on the Orioles still didn't secure a spring training home, they still neglected their farm system, but man, the guy wasn't afraid to go toe-to-toe with NY and BOS for the big time free agents. Then all of the sudden, he does an about face? What happened?
He overruled Gillick on some trades and basically ran him out. Then he fired Davey Johnson.
That was the start. I don't have the energy to list what happened in the 12 years since. Quite frankly, it's too depressing.
By the way, Brian Roberts has a herniated disk.
Yawn.
Mark,
I got all that, know the history…but why? Why the change of course?
Does anybody here wish they had hired John Lowenstein again? Now he was awesome.
I thought Proctor and Lowenstein were an awesome team.
I don't think he really changed. He has always run this team like he runs his law firm. He needs to win at all costs. And when I mean win I mean he's gotta have things done his way.
He bought the team in 1993 and everything was new to him. The team he bought was a winning team. They struggled a bit in 1995 but exploded in 1996. Once he decided to stick his nose in and start making decisions the team started to lose. Then it just snowballed in my opinion. The team fell off the map in 1998 and he decided he knew how to fix it. Fast forward to 2010 and here we are. By the way, I found this little nugget about Brady Anderson. What an idiot he is.
In May 2009, a Sports Illustrated article reviewing owners of Major League Baseball franchises rated Angelos as one of the five worst owners in the United States. The article notes that the methodology "was not scientific" and "weighing heavily in the decision was the team's success or failure on the field."[4]
Two weeks later, Brady Anderson, a member of the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame, responded in an op-ed to the Baltimore Sun, writing that Angelos deserves to be on a list of the "best owners in baseball."[5]
"Perhaps one day another article will be written attempting to name the best owners in baseball and a little more research will be put forth and Peter Angelos will be on that list, where he rightfully belongs."[5] Anderson cited the Orioles robust payroll, low ticket prices, liberal food policy, model ballpark – to which Angelos refused to sell the naming rights, and recent hiring of GM Andy MacPhail – in making the case for Angelos
I guess if Angelos had paid me tens of millions of dollars I may be his advocate, too.
Angeloes is a decent owner. Give the guy some credit. I would take him over Babbling Bob Irsay or Cheaper than a $2 ho Eli Jacobs.
Brady Anderson in comical. Living in Vegas, he probably needs the money. He can stay at Cal's place.
Q. What does the Orioles, Winstrol and 50 jacks have in common?
A. Brady Anderson
Nails,
I think Angelos is hard headed. He's decided that he's going to show the baseball world that the salary structure is out of whack and can't go on. Great, but at who's expense? Ours, the fan's.
9inchnails
Angelos is a decent owner?
Did I get transported into bizarro world?
