Maryland local Brett Cecil out pitched Jason Berken in a match up of rookie arms in front of 35,000 at Camden Yards.
Cecil got his first win since mid-May and walked into the Yard with a 6.23 ERA but shut down the O’s bats with a scoreless outing in six innings.
Berken lowered his ERA from 6.25 to 5.87 in his 5.2 innings of work in which he surrendered only two runs, but still got the loss and hasn’t recorded a win since his debut on May 26.
The O’s looked to strike with bases loaded and two outs in the sixth, but Cesar Izturis, back from the disabled list, grounded out to end the inning.
Luke Scott extended his hitting streak to ten games.
The Birds sent down starting pitcher David Hernandez to activate is Izturis. In doing so, they had to shuffle the rotation for the remainder of the first half of the season. Rich Hill pitches tomorrow and Brad Bergesen gets the nod on Sunday.
