Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was reportedly displayed on the scoreboard at the Verizon Center for Washington’s playoff opener on Wednesday against the New York Rangers. Harbaugh shouted “let’s go Caps,” and was apparently booed by fans in attendance.
106.7 The Fan’s Capitals beat reporter Sky Kerstein tweeted the news during the game. Kerstein said Harbuagh got “booed loudly” by the fans at the Verizon Center.
If Harbaugh was shown on TV, I must have missed it. I’ve searched the interwebs for more fans or reporters talking about why Harbaugh was booed by the Washington crowd, but haven’t had much luck finding anything.
We’ve talked about the love for the Capitals in Baltimore, perhaps the Redskins faithful weren’t fans of seeing Harbs on the scoreboard. The only other theory I could think of is that Ravens fans are upset with the head coach after Baltimore’s finish last season…
It’s all speculation at this point. If anyone was there or saw it on TV, feel free to chime in on the comments.
I for one was angry to even have seen him up on the board! As a die hard Baltimore sports fan, it seems like treason to even root for a DC team. We hate the Skins, they stole our hoops team, and well the Nats are awful!
Nobody likes politicians. Harbs is a politician.
This “recent reciprocity” is not going both ways. By far, the majority of folks in those seats are die hard Redskin’s fans as well as Caps fans. They resent the push of Baltimore fans being forced upon them by Leonsis, who is simply trying to expand the brand (and rightfully so). May have been too much, too soon for the Caps faithful. As someone from Baltimore, I have always been a Caps based on simple proximity. Before the Ravens, I grew up a Skins fan so it seemed natural when I was younger. I do not understand why people have angst against the DC teams though. Seems silly to me.
Redskins suck and so do their fans.
@Ravenator –
Ravenator, I agree completely. This is a D.C. team, they do not like our teams and we sure as heck shouldn’t root for theirs. I don’t like the D.C. sports fan, and I don’t like the city the way I like Baltimore. There is no bad blood really between Baltimore and Phili, so why can’t Baltimore fans root for the Flyers or Sixers? I have heard Washingtonians refer to Baltimore as their “suburb”- that is downright disrespectful (Baltimore has higher population, by the way). It is horrifying the way this site has become the D.C. Metropolitan Area Sports Report.
Do you know why they booed Harbaugh? Because they are smart enough not to root for their crosstown rival’s teams, that’s why! Yet we happily grab onto the Caps like a little brother who says “Can I come too you guys?” We should be better than that, have some self respect.
@Baltimorean –
I live in South AA County about equidistant to Baltimore and DC. I grew up in Glen Burnie, a diehard Colts and O’s fan. I work at Fort Meade, also right smack in the middle of both markets. While we as old Colts fans and now Ravens’ fans loathe the Redskins, the rivalry is very one-sided. Most Washington fans I know couldn’t care less about the Ravens, they hate Philly and Dallas and don’t understand why we hate the Redskins, an NFC team. As a matter of fact, while some Washington fans have taken to the Nats, the still root for the O’s as their AL team. The “rivalry” is very one sided – meaning only Baltimore cares about it. Harbaugh is a polarizing figure even among Ravens’ fans. He is a corporate used car salesman who, despite a seemingly gaudy record, is in way over his head. I’m sure a percentage of those fans were Ravens fans who think he has underachieved and continues to back coaches – Cameron in particular – who have helped the team make quick exits from the playoffs the last two years. I would have booed him, myself.
I was at the game and saw it. I’m from Baltimore and live in DC. I hate the Deadskins and love the Ravens and CAPS. I thought it was cool to see Harbaugh on the big screen rocking the red! I was annoyed that fans booed him, but they’re just jealous Deadskins fans. Their team sucks and their manager wasn’t up there, eff them. Recently there was an article in the Washington Post about the increase in Baltimore CAPS fans, which I thought was pretty cool. I may live in DC, but I’m a Bmore girl and love seeing my hometown support the CAPS!
Have Harbaugh throw out the first ball at an Orioles game, it’ll be a much different story.
@JoeinCleveland –
Don’t bet on in Joe. Offense has underachieved, yet Harbaugh is pulling a Tammy Wynette. Ravens have won one playoff game in each of the last two years, despite having 4 receivers with 500+ catches, an o-line stacked with first day draft picks, a first round draft pick at QB, two running backs that would both be starters most anywhere else, a defense with two HOFers and a monster at NT ranked consistently in the top 5 in the NFL. Yet, not one Division Championship. Despite the last season that Billick was here when the team basically gave up, Harbaugh didn’t inherit a lousy team. This wasnt the Browns that he inherited. He’s surly, often confused, and condescending and damned lucky to have such a solid team that hides his mistakes. This team has underachieved the last two seasons. I’d boo him.
Who cares, it’s a Washington team.
