Per the Elias Sports Bureau, Manny Machado, after recording two hits last night against the Nationals, now has 44 hits in May, second only to Mickey Mantle for hits in a single month by a player under the age of 21. Mantle had 46 hits in July of 1952, also in his age 20 season.
With one game looming this month, coming tonight against Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers, Machado has an opportunity to break this record with a three hit ballgame, a feat he has accomplished ten times already in the first two months of this 2013 season (including two four-hit games), against Max Scherzer and the Detroit Tigers.
It wasn’t too long ago that Machado was seen in the same company as Mantle, as Machado joined an elite group of only three hitters, (Mantle, Miguel Cabrera, and Andruw Jones) who have hit home runs in the postseason before the age of 21.
Thanks alot, buzz killer. Machoman goes “o for” on the last day of May, so second place will have to do. That said, pretty good company to keep. How about in the future, rather than you guys being on the leading edge of the obvious information you delay a day. Let’s see O’s win streak leading after 7, Johnson’s save streak and now Manny’s hits all stopped by BSR. Stop the madness. Superstitious, you’d better believe it. For the good of the home team, sometimes better to not be the first to break the news.
Hey Captain Obvious, how about you run an article today about how much better Miggy is this year versus his triple crown winner last year. MAYBE some of that mojo will cause him to misstep over the next two days.
How many plate appearences for Mantle and Manny,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
He may be in pinstripes in four years so both record holders would have been Yankees……………….
