The University of Maryland announced on Tuesday night that they will name the basketball court at the Comcast Center in honor of former coach Gary Williams. The formal ceremony for the dedication is scheduled on December 9.
Williams is an alumnus of Maryland, who during his 22 year coaching career led the team to ACC and national championships. As of March, Williams was the third winningest coach all-time in the ACC and became Maryland’s all-time winningest coach with a 461-252 record.
The decision to name the court in Williams’ honor should have been an easy one for Maryland. He’s a guy that completely turned the program around and deserves the recognition for doing so. I was happy to see that the university’s Facilities Naming Committee unanimously approved the decision.
