Baltimore‘s 2009 first round draft pick, Brian Matusz, took the mound for his major league debut in Detroit.

Matusz became the six Orioles’ rookie starter this season, the birds won all six of the games, and he was the fifth starter to get a win in his debut. That’s a modern baseball record.

The rookie left hander went five innings, giving up six hits, and just one earned run, he walked three and struck out five. In the first inning he retired the side on just 11 pitches and got out of jams in the second, third and fifth.

Detroit sent Jarrod Washburn to tame the Orioles line up, but the bats were too hot in the motor city. Brian Roberts led off with a double and then Nick Markakis drove him in with an RBI single. That would be the game winning run.

Cesar Izturis hit his first homerun since opening day, Markakis hit his 13th of the year.

The O’s put eight runs on the board and won their fifth game since the All Star break.
