Steve Clevenger and Tommy Hunter - Baltimore Orioles

So Matt Wieters doesn’t need Tommy John surgery, which is really cool and I’m excited, but he likely won’t be back behind the dish until that elbow feels comfortable again. Tonight, Steve Clevenger is catcher while Wiets DH’s. It’s the fourth straight game that Wieters has served as the Orioles designated hitter.

And that’s a bit of a concern. The Orioles have enough DH-type guys. Nelson Cruz probably shouldn’t be playing in the field consistently, nor should Delmon Young (who’s crushed baseballs all year, but isn’t getting playing time).

According to FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal, the Orioles are aggressively looking for a backup catcher. Right now, 27-year-old rookie Caleb Joseph is filling that role. Joseph is an awesome story, but likely doesn’t provide the pop the Birds are looking for from that position.
