In desperate need of run support for their starting pitchers, the Orioles have recalled Rhyne Hughes from AAA Norfolk and sent down Justin Turner. Hughes, a first baseman, is expected to join the team in Boston and is known for his power at the plate.
The 26 year old was acquired by the Orioles in the Gregg Zaun trade to Tampa Bay and is hitting .353 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 15 his games with the Tides.
The criticism of Hughes is that he is a high strikeout hitter, though that is the case with a lot of power hitters. I hope the move will provide a spark in the Orioles line up. They certainly need it with their stretch of games against the Red Sox and Yankees over the next two weeks.
I wish they’d call up a manager.
Yawn……………
Well look at this- He is 2-2, 1 rbi in his debut. He has been playing fine defense at first base, and is making a great first impression. No one has said if this will be a short stint in the major leagues, but if he keeps hitting and driving in runs like we saw that he could do in Spring Training and like he has so far tonight, he may take over Atkins' spot in the lineup a few times a week.
Don't you love great first impressions!
Who needs a new Manager? Look at the way the Birds are batlling back in the 9th inning…They haven't given up…Credit Trembley for that!
Not a bad game to watch, I just wasn't a fan of the outcome.

I liked what I saw from Hughes. I think he's definitely got power and he proved it last night. It's unfortunate that he couldn't top it off with a come from behind win on a base hit from Papelbon…but that's just been the way this season has gone I suppose.
I thought that was my comment lol. glad you agree. He got another double today off of Wakefield! love this kid so far
Even if he goes 0 for the rest of the day, he had a solid series in Fenway. Glad to see it.
I had Ravens2488 texting me last night dogging the young kid. He was 2 for 4 at the time in his major league debut, but ended the game with the go ahead run on base, but how can you dog the young man? Plenty of fingers to be pointed again last night – Fat Albers and the rest of the bullpen – but how do you dog a young kid who goes 2 for 5 in Fenway in his debut?
You don't. 2488 is a hater. He had two hits and a RBI. A big double and a run scored today. I like him.
Yea, but if you say he had a good debut, somehow he takes that to mean you said he's going to the HOF. Us for die hard O's fans haven't had much to cheer about, as Dr. Evil would say…"Throw me a bone, here"
I agree that us die hard fans havent had to much to cheer about, but, todays lineup showed hope. We all know that our starting pitching is good, and finally, we got to hit a few to the wall. Even with the amazing defense of Beltre at third, we were able to score runs in bunches which is something we showed that we could do during spring training. Hopefully, as Meredith said, this will carry over and that we will be able to build on this game.
Garrett Atkins who everyone here thought would somehow "rediscover" his hitting skills even though he left Colorado, is now 0 for 17 vs LHP this season.
The Orioles won today despite doing their best to blow it.
Hughes hit a few balls.
Great!
3 Wins in 3 Weeks…26 Weeks in a Season…Man, 70 Wins seems a long way from here, huh? Either way, lets enjoy this one through the Off Day, Sheila! 🙂
Hughes had a big series. I like the kid!
And we all (less Ravens8842) liked Jeff Fiorentino when we first saw him…And little Mike Fontenot that one year in Spring Training…And "Sweet" Lou Montanez…
In an unrelated note, I'm still bitter about a previous regime screwed Larry Bigbie while he was here by giving away his At Bats to the Ancient BJ Surhoff…
Or did I just imagine that? No, wait, y'all should probably disregard anything Ol' Bruz prints in these spaces, seeing as how Mark has dubbed me "not even somewhat informed" over in the Analyzing the Ravens 1st 3 Picks Comments.
