The Opening Day festivities at Camden Yards included fireworks for the starting lineup, but they were nothing compared to the fireworks after a 2-run homerun off the bat off newly acquired shortstop Cesar Izturis.
Despite cutting the lead to one run in the 7th inning, the Yankees were stomped by the Orioles on Opening Day. CC Sabathia looked nothing short of terrible in his debut with the Yanks.
New York’s Ace left Camden Yards with an ERA over 12 after pitching 4.2 innings, giving up 6 earned runs, 5 walks, and no strike outs. Sabathia was one hopping pitches to Posada behind the plate and could not keep up with the bats of the O’s.
The other Yankee’s acquisition, Severna Park local Mark Teixeira was not only booed out of the Yard, but choked at the plate. Tex went 0-4 with a walk, his highlights included a dribbler to second base with a chance to tie the game and a pop out to shortstop.
More importantly than the Yankees keeping cool were the Orioles getting hot. Jeremy Guthrie hushed his spring critics with a Guthrie-esque performance. 6 innings pitched, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, and 3 strike outs.
The bats looked great at the yard too. Roberts and Jones had three hits each, Markakis had two, Huff had a huge RBI double, and Cesar Izturis got the fans screaming with his 2-run homer that sealed the deal for the O’s.
The Orioles host the Yankees for game two Wednesday at 7 PM.
