The Orioles “number one starter”, Chris Tillman, hasn’t recorded a quality start since the Reagan administration — actually it was April 11, but that was still a super long time ago. Since then Tillman has allowed 13 earned runs over his last 15.1 innings pitched. Tonight he’ll try to turn it around against a Rays lineup that has shown more patience over their last five games. As a team, Tampa Bay is slashing .284/.336/.472 this month.
I’m looking for Tillman to look like the Tillman of early April and 2013 and put the O’s back on track after dropping two of three in Minnesota.

I will be keeping an eye on a few players at bats today. Since Manny Machado has returned he is batting .176 after 17 at bats. Ryan Flaherty is batting a measly .194 after 67 at bats. Both Steve Pearce and Steve Clevenger are at .222 with 27 at bats. All of these guys are in the lineup tonight and they all need to improve. If we want to win some games these guys need to improve their hitting. Manny is still being put in the all important 2 hole and he needs to get on base with Cruz behind him. Flaherty needs to prove that he is more valuable at this time than Schoop who has also been struggling at the plate. Pearce and Clevenger just need to prove that the team does not take a huge step back when Davis and/or Wieters are out.

Things you can be sure of: death, taxes, and excellent Rays pitching. The key to winning a game (and a series) against Tampa Bay is managing to score some runs on a great staff. It doesn’t matter how many runs your pitchers give up if your lineup can’t hold up their end of the bargain.
I’m looking for the same thing I was hoping for last week – a rebound from Adam Jones to get something going in the middle of the order. Jones has been scuffling as of late (not even reaching the Mendoza line over the last seven games), but if he can have a big night at the plate, particularly between Nelson Cruz and Matt Wieters, it will mean good things for the first place Baltimore Orioles.
