Ever since Mr. Irrelevant was picked and the NFL Draft ended, fans far and wide have asked the question, “how come the Ravens didn’t take a cornerback in the draft”? Maybe they couldn’t get the one they wanted where they were picking (Kyle Wilson, perhaps). Could’ve been they stayed true to the draft board and didn’t want to reach for a pick. Or, they could’ve been satisfied with what they’ve got. Whatever the reason, I am certain that they will bring in a few cornerbacks, if for no other reason to add some bodies for minicamps and training camp.

Ozzie Newsome has gone on record as stating that the team would be adding some additional players. The Ravens have already signed Prince Miller, an undrafted free agent from Georgia. While small in height, Miller reportedly possesses good speed and may also help out on special teams. There is also a lengthy list of veteran cornerbacks available as well; familar names such as Will Allen, Dre Bly, Fred Smoot and Ken Lucas can be found there; each with their own set of good qualities and possible flaws.

The Ravens may need the extra bodies; at last report Lardarius Webb may start the season on the physically unable to perform list, which would mean he would miss the first six weeks of the season. Fabian Washington is also recovering from a knee injury and may be ready by training camp, but will he be 100%? Time will tell. One rumor that has since been debunked is that the Ravens were looking to trade Jared Gaither to the Raiders for Nnamdi Asomugha; both Jamison Hensley of the Sun and Peter King of Sports Illustrated are on record saying that the trade will not happen, primarily because of Asomugha’s contract, which carries a $16.8 million price tag for next season. The Ravens can ill afford to take on that salary and pay their young talent top dollar as well.

One last option is to bring back Ravens’ standbys Frank Walker and Corey Ivy, both of whom are familiar with the defensive scheme. I can hear the groans from here regarding Mr. Walker; I wouldn’t advocate bringing him back, but who knows? Coach Harbaugh has made it known he wouldn’t be upset with Walker returning, so it may come to pass.
