According to multiple sources, the Ravens placed their franchise tag on defensive tackle Haloti Ngata on Tuesday evening. Ngata is estimated to make $12.5 million next season, the projected franchise salary for players at his position.
The Ravens informed Haloti Ngata on Tuesday morning that he would get the tag today and I’m told he understood and accepted the situation.
The last two players franchised by the Ravens were Chris McAlister and Terrell Suggs, who both eventually secured long term contracts in Baltimore.
Just curious, if anybody knows…Heard the Ravens gave him the second type of tag that still offers other teams the opportunity to bid for his services, but require two first round picks as compensation. What are the benefits in doing this?

The exclusive tag (Manning is the only guy to get it this year and it's the lesser used of the two) bases the one year salary off of the current salaries as of the draft in April.
The non exclusive tag (Ngata) bases the one year salary of the previous year's top 5 at whatever position.
Mark was talking about the exclusive franchise tag when referring to Manning in the quote you pointed out. The other guys you brought up are transition, or non-exclusive tags.
Here is a quote from and Adam Schefter article from 2/15/11 in regards to Vick being tagged:
The Eagles went so far as to give Vick the "exclusive" designation, barring him from talking with other teams. The only other player to have received the exclusive tag thus far is four-time MVP Peyton Manning by the Indianapolis Colts. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=61236…
Check that.
Vick got the exclusive tag as well.
