The NFL handed out fines to Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis for his hit on Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward and Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark for his hit on Balimtore tight end Ed Dickson. Lewis was fined $20,000 for a devastating helmet-to-helmet hit that he put on Ward who left the game with a “stinger.” He was not penalized for the hit.
Additionally, Clark was fined $40,000 for his hit on a defenseless Dickson. Clark, a repeat offender according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times, led with the helmet on his hit as well. He was penalized during the game.
Whether you think football has gone too soft or not, at least the league was consistent with both of these fines. The NFL is trying to get away from concussions and both fines clearly demonstrate that. I have seen Lewis make some squeaky clean hard hits before and still get a letter from the league, but this was not one of them.
