Orioles manager Buck Showalter spoke with Jim Duquette of Power Alley on MLB Network Radio on Thursday to clear the air about Adam LaRoche, the Orioles rotation, fans and the Yankees’ budget.
“It’s our responsibility to make it attractive other than just financial,” Showalter said in response attracting free agents to Baltimore. “…but when someone tells you it’s not about the money. It’s about the money.”
Duquette asked Showalter about the reports on the Adam LaRoche deal. “That reports not right by the way,” he said. He did however confirm the interest in a first baseman, “It’s no secret that we have interest in Adam & Derrek Lee and some other guys.”
Showalter also said that he has talked to Andy MacPhail about the O’s rotation going into 2011. “Right now we’ve got 6 (potential starters) for 5 (spots), you’d like to have that 8 or 9,” he said. “Andy is very aware of it. We talk about it every day, and it’s a point of emphasis as we move on thru the off season.”
Buck confirmed that he believes in Andy MacPhail’s plan and told the host he doesn’t blame fans for not trusting the Orioles yet. He also said that he “chuckles” when he hears about the Yankees off season “budget.”
First of all, Merry Christmas to Sadler, JP, XP, Zach, the entire staff of BSR, the loyal commentors and guests!!!
I really hope in the next few years they give Buck the hoses to work with. I believe in this guy and think he can right the ship.
Hosses, not hoses! Darned auto spell!
Until Angelos and MacPhail are gone the best we can hope for is 15 games under .500. Unfortunately, Angelos has kept the O's down for so long, that will look like a success. O's fans need to demand success and a Championship!!!! Stop making excuses and bring us a Champioship!!!
…because the Orioles were tearing through the AL East before MacPhail got here. Yep, it's gotta be that.
Just wondering, Sheila, if your last post implies that MacPhail has improved things in the time he's been here? Looking in the rear view mirror, that "steal" he pulled off in the Bedard Trade isn't looking quite as good as time goes on…The $60-some Million to Markakis isn't, either…Nor is the $10 million a year to the 33-year old, admitted (when he had to) steroid user playing 2B…Etc…Mark is right…No more excuses…Time to Getter Done!
I'm saying it takes more than a smart GM to undo a decade of idiocy, especially in a sport where success is planned out years ahead of time. Things have stunk under MacPhail, things stunk before MacPhail. I'm saying that Mark might be right about Angelos more than MacPhail, because while GMs have come and gone, Angelos is the only constant.
On that, we can finally agree!!!!!!!!!!! Sheila, there was a time not long ago when Ol' Bruz had two seats in the second row behind the O's Dugout…$80 for each seat…Gave 'em up after the 2008 season…My "Orange Carpet" Rep sent me a form letter stating he was disappointed I was giving up my season tix and that if there was anything he could do to help, to let him know…One letter…Almost three years ago…After how many years of declining attendance? My point is, if anyone has ever canceled a magazine subscription or at one time belonged in the old BMG Music Club, you know how relentlessly those folks try to regain your business…Not Uncle Peter and crew…Why? There is so much money coming in through Television and other sources, the O's couldn't care less if Ol' Bruz comes and spends $160 to get in the door or not. And that's a shame. Just like its a shame the Pirates always turn a profit despite all those losing seasons.
