In flurry of moves today, the Orioles said “So long” to Justin Duchscherer. Duchscherer was recovering some injuries and it was hoped that he might contribute to this young rotation; however, every time it seemed like he would make progress in rehab, it would be followed by a setback.
I’m not really frustrated by this. The O’s took a gamble on a guy and lost.
So now on to another risk. The O’s picked up pitcher Jo Jo Reyes on the Waive Wire. Reyes, 26, went 5-8 with a 5.40 ERA (110.0IP, 66ER) in 20 starts for the Blue Jays this season. That should fit perfectly into what the O’s are currently sending out there.
Its pretty easy to be pessimistic about Reyes and his performance deserves most of that pessimism. However, he has been slightly unlucky. Reyes’ FIP is about a run lower than his ERA and the Orioles do need pitchers who can actually pitch right now. Still, his highest upside is a #4 or #5 starter and given his decline in swinging strike rate since 2009 that seems kinda unlikely.
So lets see, at the beginning of the year I said…
Duchscherer is a bum who won’t last the season – CHECK
Lee will be traded – CHECK
Vlad will be traded – INCONCLUSIVE
Brian Roberts will miss at least 60 days due to injury – CHECK
Hardy will be traded – WRONG
Orioles will not win 81 games – INCONCLUSIVE
Soooooooooooo, 3/4 with 2 still pending is a good record so far…
we dump a guy that didn’t throw one pitch against competition this year for a guy who set the record for consecutive losses. great, we’ve become desperate. i heard their holding open tryouts next week at rash field. what i would give for a competitive team for just one year…
The O’s need some Mayflower moving vans,quick……..
