If you needed further proof that the Washington Capitals are Baltimore’s hockey team, here it is. According to Nestor Aparicio of WNST, the Capitals are close to finalizing a deal that will allow them to play a preseason game in Baltimore during the month of September.
Aparicio first posted the report in a status update on facebook, as of Monday night details were still not released about the game or its location. I would assume that the Capitals would take the ice at the First Mariner Arena as it seems to be the only plausible location for the game.
The Capitals organization has not been shy about expanding to Baltimore. Owner Ted Leonsis discussed the franchises’ marketing in Baltimore and even said that the buzz around the Caps is in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC.
What do you think of the Capitals reaching out to Baltimore?
That is an excellent idea. I’m looking forward to it.
While some may feel angst towards Washington or Baltimore respectively, the reality is both cities are closely tied together. The Wizards were originally the Baltimore Bullets, and played games at First Mariner for some time. Not to mention there are still a throng of Baltimore Orioles fans in Washington DC. The lines are drawn with football, but too many other connections to not see associations.
Good move by the Capitals.
Yes some may feel angst towards Washington here in Baltimore But I myself dont care because its Hockey! not football we dont have a hockey team since the skip jacks but that doesnt even count lol…. alls im sayin is Baltimore loves the CAPS…well most do and I think its a great idea! ill only have to drive 15min! i can definetly deal with that! and for the haters in DC about this idea….Suck it up its 1 Game! we drive there all the time and dont look back. See you all there!!! GO CAPS!!

Caps Season Ticket Holders better not be shanghaied into buying tickets for this game.
I’d go
It’s hard to call it shanghaied when season ticket holders aren’t technically charged for pre-season games. The per-ticket full season price is also broken down into 41 games (I believe), which would not include the pre-season.
Frankly, for most of the pre-season games I go to, only about 1/2 of the usual crowd shows up at the Verizon Center as it is.
As a STH, I for one have no problem what so ever if they move a preseason game to Baltimore in an effort to expand the fan base and allow fans in Baltimore to see the team play there.
What I’ll be a lot more concerned about is how the team will handle the season ticket holders if the team opens the season in Russia, as that IS a home game that will have paid for under my season plan.
Well Said!!
Awesome!
“Caps Season Ticket Holders better not be shanghaied into buying tickets for this game.”
Since I already have my bill for next year’s tickets, I’m sure I’m already committing to buy them, whether or not they Caps have decided where they’ll be playing it. On the bright side, if I choose not to go, I figure I’ll be able to sell if for more than the $10 they were commanding this year.
I wonder how this fits in with the oft reported trip to Russia the Caps are rumored to have on the schedule for next year?
Woo-hoo! I run into more and more Caps fans in Baltimore, and it would be a nice throw-back to when the Clippers were the Caps AHL team in Baltimore. Having a pre-season game in FMA would be definitely on my calendar.
Watch a Caps game at cozy FMA and then head to the cozy Block. Sounds like a great plan.
There might as many Caps fans in Baltimore as in any other location so it is natural for the Caps to want to play in front of their supporters.
