Late July, Aaron Wilson reported that guard Eric Steinbach worked out for the Ravens in Owings Mills. Steinbach was a year removed surgery to repair a bulging disk and had also missed the entire 2011 season. The Ravens chose to pass on Steinbach.
Fast-forward to the start of training camp and HBO’s Hard Knocks. The Miami Dolphins decide to take a flyer on Steinbach. Steinbach played for then Offensive Line Coach, now Dolphins Head coach, Joe Philbin at the University of Iowa. While Steinbach seems like a great guy, the show brought to light his actual condition. He was having to miss practices and sit out of preseason games because his body couldn’t handle the stresses.
As early as yesterday, it was announced that Steinbach would retire. Sorry for the spoiler for those who do watch Hard Knocks, but you should have seen this coming.
All that to say, it seems like Ozzie and the gang were able to get this one determination correct. Bobby Williams may not be Ben Grubbs or the ideal left guard, but at least he will be able to play this season. Steinbach deserves credit for giving it a go, but now the Dolphins are forced to look into more options going into their third preseason game.
