Word is that Pablo Sandoval has a broken hamate bone in his hand, and it will probably require surgery. Looks like he will hit the DL. Another story out today is that Ryan Zimmerman saw another doctor and apparently he isn’t feeling any better. Longoria had a similar injury as Zimmerman and has been out since the 2nd game of the season, so I expect Zimmerman to miss another week or two for sure. Those of you with Longoria coming back can activate him for Tuesday. If you need emergency replacements once Pablo hits the DL here you go:
Juan Uribe- Plays multiple positions and has homered in the last 3 games he has started in. He just returned from injury and seems to be healthy now. Casey Blake is out with staph infection so he should be in the lineup every day for the foreseeable future.
Danny Valencia- Has the ability to get multiple hits any game and hit for power. He’s slowly been heating up and I expect him to break through sometime soon. Hopefully its once you pick him up.
Mark Reynolds- He will kill your average, sure, but he has massive power that hasn’t really started yet this season. When he starts hitting HR’s a lot will come at once.
Alberto Callaspo- Should get you hits and give you a decent average to make up for Pablo’s loss. He can hit a HR once in awhile too. He is also eligible at 2B and plays everyday.
Jonathan Herrera- Make him your last option. He gets some hits in a good park and for a good offense. He can steal you some bases too.
Hopefully Pablo isn’t out long. Injuries are not fun. Believe it or not, in my 3 leagues that I am in, my 3B’s are Longoria, Zimmerman, and Sandoval. Even The Fantasy God can’t escape the injury bug. We will get through it together.
Zimmerman will have surgery and will be out for 6 weeks.
Sandoval has been placed on the DL, will have surgery Tuesday, and will miss 4-6 weeks
Pre-season, you said you thought Nathan would take over the closer role from Capps. Do you still think that’s likely to happen? My teams a bit light on closers and someone’s looking to trade him to me but I’m pretty apprehensive based on your earlier post.
Any other advice on closer roles that might be changing? I just grabbed Salas on a whim cause he was available and seems to be getting some opportunities, though it appears that St. Louis is kinda closing by committee right now.
I just realized that was pretty ambiguous. The pitcher I’d get is Capps, not Nathan.
@Scot – I think Nathan will be closing again by the end of the year because they want him to. I’m not big on wasting roster spots and having a guy sit there who isn’t getting saves is a waste. You could have a starter in that spot getting you Win’s and K’s. Capps is a different story because he is actually getting saves now, so yes he is worth getting at least for now. Last I heard Mitchell Boggs is the closer in STL. He didn’t get it today because he came in when the game was tied, but other than that he is 3/4 in save chances and is still the closer. I’d get Storen for the Nats if he’s there. Long term I think Chapman takes over for Cordero.
So who would you take out of these 3 first baseman, I lost Sandoval as my first baseman, and Freeman and Smoak just got picked up.
Gaby Sanchez, Kila Ka’aihue,Brett Wallace
@Ryan – I trust Gaby Sanchez more. He’s a more complete player. Wallace is second. He has less power so if the average come down he doesn’t have a whole lot of value…and he should struggle again since he is so young. Ka’aihue is off my radar.
Wish I would have done a two start blog because Gorzelanny was at the top of my list this week. He just threw 8 shutout innings. He had his best career splits vs. SF and also does well against FLA….use the two start strategy and read those splits guys! I’m off to a great start thanks to him.
