After a tough homestand, the Orioles hit the motor city with rookie Chris Tillman making his road debut on the hill.
Tillman had a rough first inning, but was given five runs of offensive support from Baltimore off Justin Verlander.
Brian Roberts hit the second pitch of the game out of Comerica Park to give Baltimore an early 1-0 edge. B-Rob has a modest seven game hit streak in which he is hitting .400 with eight runs scored.
Aubrey Huff, Ty Wigginton, and Luke Scott all drove men across the dish in that first inning rally. Luke Scott, who has been slumping since the break, was hitting just .128 over his last 13 games and he went 1-3 with 2 RBI and a walk last night.
But, after that first inning Verlander zoned in and shut the Birds down. The veteran allowed just three hits in his remaining seven innings pitched and did what all great pitchers do, kept the game close for an offensive attack.
Chris Tillman allowed two more runs after his three run first, that’s five total, over six innings. Tillman pitched to his second no decision in his second start, his ERA is now 6.75.
With the game tied at 5 in the bottom of the 9th inning, Danys Baez served up the walk off homerun to Clete Thomas and the birds fell in game one of the four game series.
Baltimore is now 4-13 since the All Star Break, they have led in 11 of the 17 games.
