There will be no Jeremy Guthrie trade with Detroit. The Tigers were the favorite to acquire Guthrie at the deadline, but reports say that the Orioles were not happy with what Detroit was offering. Just this afternoon the Tigers acquired starter Doug Fister and former Oriole David Pauley for Charlie Furbush, Casper Wells, and third base prospect Francisco Martinez. Furbush was a name that I mentioned in all of my Orioles trade rumors articles this past week that could have been included in trades for multiple O’s players.
With the Tigers now having Cy Young contender Justin Verlander, young ace Max Scherzer, the red hot Rick Porcello, the newly acquired Doug Fister, and veteran Brad Penny, they no longer have room for Guthrie.
If O’s fans were hoping to acquire the young potential ace Andy Oliver there is only hope left in a Koji Uehara deal.
After Guthrie’s great start last night and the poor outing of Mariners starter Erik Bedard, more teams are rumored to be interested in Guthrie instead of Bedard. The Cardinals and Red Sox are now the favorites to acquire Guthrie. For more on what the Orioles could get from those teams click here.
Of course Guthrie is still with the O’s… Of all the teams in baseball that need to get rid of players it’s the Orioles but yet again, McFail is slow to pull the trigger on anything.
It’s deja vu all over agin, every year, same thing, Orioles suck:
1. McFail signs over the hill or hurt or garbage players
2. Orioles hype the team
3. Fans get their hopes up
4. Orioles look good for about 1 month every year
5. Trade deadline nears but McFail is afraid to pull the trigger
6. Fans start gettin agitated
7. Orioles finish year in last place
8. Dumbass fans believe all the hype coming from Orioles
When are you fans going to learn that this team is going nowhere and keep doing the same thing every year? Until you stop giving them your hard earned money and they see a hit in their pocket you are going to get the same product every year.
When are you fans going to say enough of Yankee and RedSox and Rays fans invading Camden Yards and laughing at you fans? It’s just not normal dogging, its downright the Orioles are a laughing stock across the country.
It’s time for the fans of the Orioles to say enough of giving us a defective product. Don’t give the Orioles your money. Take to the paper and radio with your complaints. Start calling out the Orioles management and tell them “Enough already”!
No more drafting high school players that won’t make the Majors!
No more drafting players that the Orioles will undercut in salary and they don’t sign! (Wade Townsend was one and its getting close with Al Bundy this year)
Get rid of the scouts because they are garbage. (Rowell, Hobgood, Beato, etc.)
No more signing over-the-hill players (Lee, Vlad, Hendrickson, etc)
No more signing players on the hope that you catch lightning in a bottle (Duchscherer)
Stop being afraid to trade and give up the overhyped minor leaguers that have yet to pan out except 2 (Wieters & Markakis)
Trade for the young guys that have value. (Hunter Pence, Andre Either, Mat Kemp, Jose Reyes, Ubaldo Jimenez, Johnny Gomes, etc) The Orioles should have been trying to trade for these guys. They did it last year with Mark Reynolds and it has worked out fairly well.
People, I’m tired of the Orioles crap and you need to be to. Unless you stop giving them your money and keep silent about the product then you will get the same thing.
McPhail signs guys on low risk high reward deals to try to catch lightning in a bottle and capitalize at the deadline. I don’t think he’s slow to pull the trigger, I just think he’s patient. The Koji deal today was very good. I’m sure a Guthrie deal will be too. Apparently Detroit didn’t want to give enough up, so good for McPhail to hold his ground unlike the Astros did with Pence, and wait on the right deal.
Why isn’t the team going anywhere? The offense is hitting and they are young, and the pitching is very very young. Why do you expect them to contend right away in this tough division with a whole rotation of guys who are 25 and younger? Its a growing process for these guys and they are going to have lots of growing pains. After they mature together and become solid major leaguers, some of them being all-stars, they will be a contending team.
As for draft picks…Townsend and Rowell were not McPhail. We don’t know what Hobgood will do yet, he’s too young. Wieters and Matusz were great picks and so is Bundy. Bundy is our long term #1 Clayton Kershaw type pitcher. Bundy/Matusz/Britton/Arrieta/Hunter/Tillman is a solid rotation.
If they dont sign these “over the hill players” like Vlad and Lee, then your going to have even more un-experienced youngsters starting and they will struggle even more. Those guys are established place holders until a long term solution is found. NOT EVERY DEAL WILL BE A SLAM DUNK. Hardy was this year. 1/3 is what every GM hopes for.
Most of the guys you said to trade for are unavailable. The ones who are available will be gone before the window for the Orioles to contend opens. If a long term player makes sense McPhail will go for it. Like Teixeira. Like Fielder next year.
Don’t give up on the team or boycott. True fans stay loyal. Bad fans bandwagon and root for the Yankees.
When you have 13 straight years of being one of the worst teams in baseball you CANNOT sign “low risk/high reward” guys. If your a winning team that can take that chance then yes but not when you are in the bottom rung of baseball.
“Why do you expect them to contend right away?” you asked… 13 years IS NOT right away. I’ve expected them to contend for 13 straight years. So “right away” to you is? 20 years? Your whole 2nd paragraph is way off base. How much longer do they have to grow? 18 years?
Matusz WAS NOT a great pick. How can you say Matusz was a great pick when he has done nothing? This is what I’m talking about, you are speculating on a player, a player that has been a bum to this point. How many times are you going to speculate on the O’s players? They have only hit on Wieters and Markakis.
Bundy/Matusz/Britton/Arrieta/Hunter/Tillman is a solid rotation??? Why? What have they done? Bundy has done what? Matusz is so bad that he’s getting lit up in the minors. You say Bundy is the long term #1… All you guys were saying that about Matusz just last year. So it changes every year? There is one problem with that statement of yours, Bundy hasn’t signed… I’m goina be a great SS for the Orioles. Why? Not that I’ve done anything but because I said so. See how stupid that sounds. That’s what you are saying.
Long term solution is found??? Like 13+ years of being lost? You do know that next year because of Vlad, Lee, Duchscherer, Hendrickson the O’s will again be looking for a 1st sacker, DH, pitching, left fielder… Place Holders will again be purchased next year for the 13 straight year, so expect Jim Edmonds, Omar Vizquel and Jason Giambi to be signed…
If a long term player makes sense to McPhail he will go for it. Like Texiera or Fielder… Really? Oh, that’s right the ole we made a play for him but he decided to sign elsewhere. Not that the Orioles undercut the other offers by 15-30 mil or they came in at the 11th hour is the reason why they didn’t sign “insert bigtime star name here”…
Just like a Democrat. Because someone doesn’t agree with you, the name calling or downing of the individual occurs as they aren’t true fans and are bandwagon fans.
Look at the attendance each year, it’s not good and Camden Yards is being invaded drastically.
Trust me, I know a bunch of true Oriole fans and they are tired of it and have/are cutting down alot on going to games and giving the Orioles their hard earned money.
Wow man, you are brainwashed. But that’s your opinion and I respect it…
If you know a lot of Orioles fans that are giving up and not going to Orioles games anymore then you don’t know a lot of Orioles fans. I appreciate your passion but there are just some things you don’t understand on the business end. I’m not talking about the last 13 years because yes, we have had some terrible GMs, but McPhail is not one of them. Since he’s come in we have been going in the right direction. It takes a good 5 years to see the results. Tell me in 2 years that Matusz wasn’t a good pick.
I can’t believe anyone still believes in the O’s,,,,,,,,,,the cool-aid must be tasty because the Fantasy God is drinking heavy , when will you wake up and realize the only thing that counts is the Angelos Trust Fund,,,,,,,Peter the Great must be proud , he has single handed killed baseball in Baltimore,,,,,,,,,,,,I feel sorry for the fans who still believe in this pitiful franchise , they are going to need serious mental help before it;s over……….
@SPY – Glad you see what’s happening too… Not making fun or dogging “Fantasy God” because by him being into fantasy baseball and such he really likes baseball and the Orioles and that’s fine… But he is soooooooooo wrong it’s pitiful…
@Fantasy Guy says I don’t know Oriole fans because I said they aren’t going to games anymore. Hate to tell you son but I got stats that can back that up. If your going to go against me then show some numbers and don’t just blurt something out that you don’t know.
Below are attendance records since 2007 which shows the decline… It’s year, yearly attendance, game attendance, ranking.
2011 – 1,184,268 – 21,931 – 10th of 14
2010 – 1,733,019 – 21,395 – 10th of 14
2009 – 1,907,163 – 23,545 – 9th of 14
2008 – 1,950,075 – 24,376 – 10th of 14
2007 – 2,164,822 – 26,726 – 11th of 14
Things I don’t understand on the business end? Son, I’ve been on the business end for 31 years. And you know the business end?
You HAVE to talk about the last 13 years because it’s a consecutive era of futility that has gone on and on. McFail is one of them. Do you realize that this team has not hit the 70 win mark since 2006? I think that encompasses McFails 4 year tenure. The least amount of games they have been out of 1st place during that tenure is 27 games. With a high of 39 games out.
I’m telling you now that Matusz has been a bad pick. You are hung up on a guy that is being creamed in the Majors and Minors…
I almost think you didn’t write that last piece based on your first writing because you were totally clueless in that last message.
My job is done here… @SPY, take over for me as I just ran the gauntlet on the “Fantasy God” and don’t want to make him look bad anymore.
@Fantasy God, thank you for a good debate but you have to come with better ammo next time. Don’t take a knife to a gun fight…
@Ravens you made zero good points. Those people who have stopped going to to Orioles games better stay away when they are a playoff team. Save those tickets for real fans who deserve to attend their playoff games. Tell me again how McPhail was supposed to win right away with the junk he was left with? Before McPhail we had nobody but Markakis. Now we have Wieters/Davis/Hardy/Reynolds/Jones/Reimold/Matusz/Britton/Arrieta/Tillman/Hunter/Machado/Bundy. Our system has been restocked and most of our minor league talent has graduated and is maturing at the big league level. We have one of the youngest teams in the league! When this young team starts winning in the next few years I guess I can say I told you so. I’ll also be laughing at you within 2 years when Matusz is an All-star pitcher. For someone who has been in the business for 13 years you still have a lot to learn. Now go root for the Yankees.
@FANTASY GOD – I blew you out of the water and you have yet to bring any substantial numbers to the table. You are all talk. You have nothing.
It’s 31 years son… I have 31 years in business… I bring home a 6 figure income and am in charge of the “IT” infrastructure of over 200 people. You cannot school me on business son, trust me.
Go play your fantasy baseball boy because it seems you live in a fantasy world.
Game over!
Spy and Ravens2488 seem to be “hooking up”. Where’s Mark?
31 years and a 6 figure income? Damn, I am in the wrong business. I am in the “SH” business and your are in the “IT” business maybe we can merge. Are you interested?
@9inchnail – You got me beat… With your reg job and that manwhoring you are living high off the hog…
@CARL – Spy has some good comments… He’s spot on with the Orioles…
