Angels: 7 Orioles: 5
Recap: Bad call gives O’s the boot versus LA
On Tuesday the Orioles weren’t just defeated by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, but by Angel Hernandez behind the plate.
I know what you’re thinking. Don’t blame an entire game on an umpire’s call, but wow was Angel off on his balk call on Oriole reliever Jamie Walker in the 7th inning.
With one down, Maicier Izturis on first base and Bobby Abreu at the plate, the left handed walker took a step towards first base and caught Izturis in a run down, he would be tagged out at second and called out by the umpire at second base. That however did not matter as homeplate umpire Angel Hernandez signaled Walker balked which would advance Izturis.
As Izturis is running into the dugout, thinking he is out, catcher Gregg Zaun comes running out demanding the O’s tag Izturis, which they do. But it’s too late. Trembley argued the call and was tossed. Abreu struck out, which would have been out number three in a 5-4 game. Two more runs would score in a 4 out inning and the O’s would lose 7-5.
